Alpha's STOLEN Mate (by Abigail Hayes) novel Chapter 129

Chapter 129

Kaius

Something was wrong with my body. Every time I tried to shift, my wolf slammed against an invisible barrier, unable to break through. The transformation should have been effortless-I’d been doing it since I was a child-but now it felt like trying to punch through solid

steel.

What the fuck is happening to me?

But even my frustration couldn’t completely override the awe I felt watching Elowen fight.

She was magnificent. Deadly. The white wolf moved with a grace that transcended mere combat-every strike was poetry, every dodge was art. Fire and lightning erupted from her claws with divine precision, purifying rather than simply destroying. She didn’t just kill the Elders’ guards; she judged them, each death carrying the weight of sacred justice.

This is what a true queen looks like.

I’d never seen anything so beautiful, so terrifying, so absolutely-

The dagger plunged into her back.

Everything inside me went cold, then exploded into white-hot rage.

Cross. My own fucking gamma.

Elowen’s white wolf form flickered and died, her body shrinking back to human shape as she collapsed to the ground. The divine light that had illuminated the entire sacred grounds vanished, leaving only cold moonlight..

“FUCK!” The word tore from my throat like a physical thing. “Elowen!”

I lunged toward her fallen form, every instinct screaming at me to protect her, to get to her side-

Arms wrapped around me from behind. A blade pressed against my throat, sharp enough that I felt a thin line of blood trickle down my

neck.

Rowan.

How the fuck did she get behind me so fast?

I froze, my body going rigid with impotent fury. One wrong move and she’d open my throat.

Silas brushed dirt and ash from his ceremonial robes with deliberate casualness, as if he hadn’t just nearly died moments ago. He

straightened his collar and walked to the center of the sacred grounds, his voice carrying across the stunned crowd.

“The Alpha King’s mate has committed treason against the Elder Council!” he announced with theatrical satisfaction. ‘She has been

subdued! Now, both traitors will face judgment together!”

Murmurs rippled through the gathered wolves-confusion, sympathy, fear. I caught fragments of their conversations:

“This isn’t right…”

“She’s the Sacred White Wolf…”

The Elders are going too far…”

But Silas raised his voice over their protests. “Let this be a lesson to all who would defy the Elder Council! We have guided your kind for a

thousand years! Our authority is absolute!” He gestured at Elowen’s unconscious form. “Even the White Wolf-even a creature blessed by

the Moon Goddess herself-will die if she dares challenge us!”

The crowd fell silent, fear winning out over sympathy.

Cross moved to stand beside Rowan, and I finally saw his face clearly in the moonlight. That sly, satisfied smile. The complete absence of

guilt or remorse.

How long? How long has he been betraying me?

My hands clenched into fists, every muscle in my body screaming to break free, to wrap my fingers around his throat and squeeze until-

“Rowan!” Silas’s jovial voice cut through my murderous thoughts. “I thought your magical interference had failed! But it seems you had an

inside man all along! Ha!”

Understanding crashed over me like ice water. They knew. They knew about Lysandra’s potion. They knew we’d find a way to resist the magical interference. So they planted a traitor instead.

Fuck. We walked right into their trap.

Rowan’s lips brushed against my ear, her breath hot and revolting. “My dear Alpha King,” she purred. “Did you really think I couldn’t see through your little scheme? Your mate didn’t just have a spy in her midst-she also consumed a strength-reducing poison mixed into her

food.”

Rage surged through me. I thrashed against her grip, not caring that the blade bit deeper into my throat, that blood now flowed freely

down my chest.

“Stay still,” Rowan hissed, pressing the ceremonial dagger harder against my windpipe. ‘Unless you want me to open your throat right

here.

I forced myself to stop struggling, but my entire body trembled with barely contained fury.

“As for you,” she continued, her voice dripping with satisfaction, “I gave you a slow-acting poison during my visit to your cell. That’s why

you can’t shift. That’s why you can’t help your precious mate.”

The touching. When she’d laid her hands on me, pretending to ease my pain with magic. She’d been poisoning me.

You fucking idiot, I cursed myself. If you’d just run with Elowen when she came to rescue you-if you hadn’t been so goddamn proud, so obsessed with your dignity-she wouldn’t be lying there unconscious. You dragged her into this. You failed her.

“Well then!” Silas clapped his hands together. “Let’s resume our execution! Guards, bind Kaius!”

But Rowan’s voice cut through the order. “Elder Silas, if I may suggest-why not execute the White Wolf first?”

Silas paused, turning to look at her with raised eyebrows.

“Think about it,” Rowan continued smoothly. “Her crimes are no less than the King’s. In fact, she nearly slaughtered the entire Elder Council just moments ago! Surely her punishment should be carried out immediately?”

Silas’s expression darkened, fury replacing his earlier triumph. “Yes. You’re absolutely right. That fucking beast!” He grabbed a different dagger from one of his attendants-this one clearly designed for killing powerful wolves, its blade inscribed with runes that glowed faintly in the moonlight. “Bring her to me! We’ll execute her right here, right now!”

Horror clenched around my heart as Silas began walking toward Elowen’s motionless form, that deadly blade gleaming with murderous

promise.

No. No, no, no-

“Kaius.” Rowan’s whisper was barely audible beneath the pounding of my pulse. “Remember that condition I mentioned? The deal I offered

you?”
