Chapter 154
This is why we’re stronger together.

I pressed my advantage, driving the fire wolf back with sheer ferocity. Elowen finished off the lightning wolf with a blast of her own
electricity-the real thing, not some pale imitation-that fried it from the inside out.
My opponent tried to retreat, but I was done playing. I lunged for its throat-
It vanished.
Not fled. Vanished. And reappeared behind Frost.
NO!
The gray wolf tried to dodge, his reflexes still sharp despite his deteriorating condition. But he wasn’t fast enough. The red wolf’s fangs
clamped onto his tail, holding him in place.
Elowen’s fury exploded through our shared connection. She grabbed the red wolf, her claws piercing deep, then hurled it skyward with her enhanced strength. Before gravity could reclaim it, she leaped after it, her claws extended like blades.
She tore it apart mid-air. Blood and viscera rained down.
But we’d been so focused on the immediate threat that we missed the real danger.
Elowen rushed to check on Frost, her white wolf form radiating concern-
His eyes flashed red.
A dark symbol flickered into view on Frost’s shoulder-intricate lines of cursed magic glowing briefly before vanishing beneath his fur.
Fuck! What did that witch do to my beta?! Can those claws spread curses through-
Frost’s gray form suddenly moved with unnatural speed, cutting off my thoughts. His claw struck out toward Elowen’s face, aiming for her eyes with lethal precision.
I didn’t think. I reacted.
My black wolf slammed into Frost’s side, sending him flying. My claws caught him across the ribs-not deep enough to be fatal, but enough to draw blood, to stop the attack.
He hit the ground hard, a crimson line blooming across his gray fur.
Elowen rounded on me instantly, her white wolf snarling with rage. HOW DARE YOU!
But Frost was already moving again, his eyes still that horrible red, his movements mechanical and wrong. He lunged at Elowen with

mindless aggression, no strategy, no self-preservation-just an overwhelming compulsion to destroy the White Wolf.
And he was stronger than before. The infection wasn’t just controlling him-it was enhancing him, making him faster, more powerful,
turning off his ability to feel pain or fear.
This is how she builds her army. She doesn’t just capture wolves-she turns them against each other.

Elowen tried to fight him off without seriously hurting him, but Frost was relentless. He kept coming, kept attacking, and she was losing
ground trying not to kill him.
Then I heard it. Felt it through my enhanced senses-footsteps. Heavy, powerful, approaching fast.
The Alpha exhibit. She’s releasing something from the Alpha collection.
We’re out of time.
I made a decision I knew Elowen would hate me for.
Frost. I’m sorry. But I can’t let you hurt her.
I caught him mid-lunge, my jaws closing around his scruff, pinning him. He thrashed wildly, trying to break free.
I raised my paw-not claws extended, but the blunt back of my paw-and brought it down hard against his skull.
KAIUS NO! Elowen’s mental scream was anguished.
I hit him again. Harder. Frost’s struggles weakened.
I’LL KILL YOU! I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU HURT HIM-
WE NEED TO LEAVE! I roared back through the bond. There’s something else coming! Something stronger! We can’t win this fight!
One more strike, and Frost went limp. Unconscious, not dead. But the look Elowen gave me promised murder.
Morgath was smiling. Actually smiling, like this was all an amusing performance for her entertainment.
Through the mindlink, Elowen’s voice was venomous: Fuck you! FUCK YOU! I warned you-
Open a portal. NOW. I hoisted Frost’s unconscious form onto my back. We leave or we die. Those are the options.
She wanted to argue. I could feel it through the bond-the rage, the helplessness, the guilt. But she was also a warrior, and warriors knew
when to retreat.
Her white wolf form began generating electricity. A rift tore open in space-crackling lightning forming a doorway to elsewhere.

I moved toward it with Frost’s dead weight on my back-
The new wolf arrived.
And the world stopped.

It was enormous. Easily twice the size of any wolf I’d ever seen. Its fur was pure gold-not yellow, not blonde, but actual metallic gold that caught the harsh laboratory lights and reflected them like living treasure.
It was beautiful.
It was powerful.
And it was impossibly, horrifyingly familiar.
The golden wolf’s eyes met mine-intelligent, aware, and utterly empty of recognition.
No. No no no—
“Fuck…” The word escaped me as a broken whisper, even in wolf form. “Father? What are you doing here?”
