Chapter 47 A Quiet Distance

Gael’s fingers brushed against Rosalie’s chin and nose. He gently smoothed the deep crease in her brow. Then he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
Maybe it was because of what Cameron had done the night before. The shock hit Rosalie hard, and she slept in for once.
Leon and Cameron had gone out hunting. Declan was nowhere to be seen.
Before this, someone always fetched her water from the river. Rosalie never thought it was necessary, but they said it was a husband’s duty, so she let them.
Today, she didn’t want to bother anyone. She went to the river to wash up by herself.
Micah was crouched by the water. Rosalie walked right up to him, and he didn’t notice at all. She tapped his shoulder.
He jumped, startled, and quickly put his hand into the river.
Rosalie saw a thin trace of blood spread in the water. In seconds, it was washed away with the
current.
Her heart tightened. She grabbed Micah’s hand and checked it carefully. His hand showed no wound at all.
“Where are you hurt?” Rosalie asked.
Micah shook his head. “Nowhere. You’re worrying too much.”
Rosalie was confused. She was sure she had seen blood.
And before, in the kitchen, Micah had been stammering. It felt like he was hiding something from her.
Her expression grew serious. In her mind, she called the system.
“System, check Micah’s physical condition.”
“Deep scanning requires over three minutes of skin contact.”
Rosalie thought this would be easy. She reached out to hold Micah’s hand.
But Micah pulled away. Rosalie stared at her empty hand. She couldn’t believe it. More than shock, she felt confused.

Micah clenched his jaw. He didn’t dare look at her. He forced himself to speak. “I’m tired. I’m going back to rest.”
Rosalie watched him walk farther and farther away. A heavy feeling settled in her chest.
She finished washing in a daze and returned home. Elijah was in the yard, chopping firewood.
He noticed Rosalie looked lost. Elijah slammed the axe into the stump and walked over.
“Elijah,” Rosalie said, “take me to the woods.”
Elijah brought her to the spot where they had found the wheat yesterday. Rosalie was distracted, so Elijah made her sit under the shade of a tree.
He worked fast. Soon, a tall pile of wheat stalks lay in front of her.
They hadn’t brought many baskets. After cutting some, Rosalie told him to stop.
Even after such hard work, Elijah still looked elegant. The way he sat beside her and wiped his sweat was graceful. As a peacock, loving beauty was simply in his nature.
Rosalie took out a waterskin and handed it to Elijah. He just looked at her and didn’t take it.
She drank first. Only then did Elijah accept it and take a few sips. The spilled water slid into the hide and vanished.
Rosalie was in a gloomy mood. She couldn’t understand it. Micah had always said he liked her. Why was he pushing her away now? He even felt distant.
Had she done something wrong? Or was it because she almost accepted Cameron, and that upset him?
“Sigh!”
Elijah had only been sitting there a short while, and Rosalie had already sighed ten times.
Pretending not to notice anymore would have been heartless.
“Did you and Micah have a fight?” Elijah asked.
Rosalie wanted to tell him, but complaining to others felt wrong. She swallowed her words and said, “It’s nothing.”
