April Fools “Surprise” Husband Divorcing Me For His “Pure” Girl novel Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

1 freeze.

“Wait-what?”

Gwen tilts her head, all innocent.

“Oh! Hawk spotted this necklace at the store and was like. This is 50 Gwen. Bought it right there.”

“But the chain’s way too long for me-locked kinds ridiculous hanging down-so I told him to just return it.”

My chest tightens.

This necklace. Our seventh anniversary. Six months ago

“Sorry babe, been drowning in student thesis stuff all day. Saw this at the mall during lunch and thought of you immediately.”

I’d teased him, touching the baby pink heart.

“Hawk, I’m pushing thirty. Since when do I wear teenage girl jewelry?”

He’d kissed my forehead, smiling

“You’ll always be that twenty year old girl to me. Now let me make us dinner-proper anniversary vibes, candles and everything.”

Tears burn behind my eyes, God, I must look pathetic right now.

I claw the necklace off and slam it onto the table. The pink heart splits clean in half.

Hawk sighs like I’m throwing a tantrum.

“Okay, Jesus-chill out. Look, I spaced on the date that day, alright?”

“What was I supposed to do, drive back and shop around again? You’ve worn it every single day for six months-thought you loved it.”

Something inside me snaps.

I grab the iced coffee and throw it straight in his face.

“I wore it because it was FROM YOU!”

“What am I to you, Hawk?! Some fucking PROP?!”

A vicious cramp twists through my gut. I double over, gripping the chair.

Before I can even breathe-

Boiling milk tea dumps over my head.

Sticky, Scalding.

“Okay WOW. Mrs. Carter.” Gwen’s voice drips with fake shock. “Tve been nothing but respectful to you, and you’re out here assaulting people in public?”

Chapter 2

“Yeah My turn

Hawk immediately jumps to her defense, voice all soft.

“Babe, come on-we’re just here for signatures. Don’t escalate this.”

She dabs his face with a napkin like she’s nursing a war wound. He doesn’t even look at me.

just holds out his hand.

“Sign. Stop dragging this out.”

“No.” My voice cracks. “Long as I don’t sign, she’s exactly what she is-a cheap little side chick.”

His eyes go cold.

“Sophia, you cheated too. This divorce benefits both of us.”

1 DIDN’T CHEAT! It was April Fools! I thought you were pranking me so I said it back!”

“YOU’RE the only liar here!”

He doesn’t even blink.

“Believe whatever you want. I’m done either way. Gwen gave me her virginity last night.”

He pauses. Looks me dead in the eye.

“She’s not like you-loose. I owe her better than that.”

The word punches through my ribcage.

Loose.

Ten years ago. Frat party. Roofied drink. Three guys. A locked room. Video evidence.

I was eighteen.

Hawk burst in with campus police. Deleted the footage. Held me while I sobbed.

“Sophia, listen to me-this does NOT define you. You’re not dirty. You’re not broken. I’m staying with you through every second of this

We were just lah partners before that night.

After? Inseparable.

Same grad school. Same tiny apartment. Got married at twenty-two,

“I don’t give a shit what happened. You’re still you. That’s all that matters to me.”

And now he’s using it like a knife.

I can’t get air into my lungs.

Finally, I choke out.

Instant answer. No guilt.

“Yesterday was our one year. Today’s day three-sixty-six.”

He’s been counting.
