Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Virus outbreak. The city is going into lockdown.
Six hours before the city went into lockdown, my husband Ryan texted me: Working late. Don’t wait up.
1 called him straight-still nothing.
My stomach dropped.
I yanked out my phone, fingers flying across the screen. FlightAware. Last flight out before the ban-UA587 to Auckland.
I scrolled through the passenger list-froze.
Ryan Carter. Seat 12A.
My eyes dropped one line.
Jade Monroe. Seat 12B.
His “work colleague.” The one whose name had been slipping into our conversations for months.
They left together. While I was here, stirring his goddamn beef stew, waiting like an idiot.
“Emma!” My mother-in-law Diana’s voice cut through the kitchen. “Where’s Ryan? I’m starving!”
I stared at the pot. Still bubbling. Still perfect.
I reached over and twisted the knob.
Click.
The bubbling stopped.
“He’s not coming.”
My voice came out flat.
“He’s never coming back.”
The pot boiled over. Stew hissed across the burner, drowning the flame.
I stared at my phone.
UA587. Departed.
A tiny airplane icon crept south across the screen.
I slammed the phone face-down on the counter.
Bedroom. His side of the closet.
I yanked the doors open.

Empty.
Suits Coats. Cashmere sweaters. Gone
Even his brown loafers-the ones he wore every damn day-vanished.
I pulled open the drawer. A square outline of dust where his passport used to sit
The deed to the house? Still there. Marriage certificate? Still there.
But his ID photocopy-gone.
This wasn’t last-minute.
I dropped to my knees, digging through the bottom of the closet. Found a shoebox shoved in the back.
Inside-a printed itinerary. Dated eleven days ago.
Three tickets.
UA587. Auckland.
Emma Carter. Ryan Carter. Jade Monroe.
Our names lined up in a neat little row.
Except mine had a red stamp across it.
REFUNDED.
Refund date: five days ago.
He bought three tickets eleven days ago.
Then canceled mine five days later.
He thought about taking me.
Then changed his mind.
“Emma!” Diana’s voice screeched from the living room. “Where’s my soup? My blood sugar’s dropping! You trying to kill me?”
I folded the itinerary. Slipped it into my bag.
Grabbed the pot and walked out.
The TV was playing the lockdown announcement.
“Effective 10 PM tonight, all public transportation suspended. Residents advised to shelter in place-*
Diana clicked the remote, annoyed. “God, they never shut up about this. When’s Ryan coming home?”
“He’s on a business trip.”
“Business trip? Where?”

1 set the soup in front of her.
She muttered something about terrible timing,” slurped her soup, and dropped it.
I walked to the balcony.
Down below, the entrance to our building was already blocked off with yellow tape. Someone dragged a suitcase toward the gate-security turned them back.
Wind whipped through the courtyard, snapping the plastic barriers like gunshots.
Ryan was probably at 30,000 feet by now.
Jade next to him.
His mother next to me.
My phone buzzed.
Ryan’s text: Made it to the office. Gonna be a late one. Get some rest.
Sent at 5:14 PM.
He was already at the gate by then.
I didn’t reply.
Screenshot. Saved to a new album.
I stared at the folder name for a second, typed two words.
Evidence.
