Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Day of the hearing, I saw him outside the courthouse,
It’s you? You’re married?”
His name was Finn Wilder. And yeah-fit him perfectly. Breezy. Easygoing.
nodded. “It’s all in the file. I’m not the one who screwed up.”
He grinned. “I know. Just messing with you. Relax.”
was about to respond when a familiar voice cut in.
Reese! Who the hell is that? One month and you’ve already got a new guy”
We’re not even divorced yet and you’re flaunting him around! You really did cheat!”
My smile died.
ade’s aggressive tone made my stomach turn.
ut Finn stepped in before I could say anything. Held up his bar card.
Defendant. I’m just her lawyer. Don’t make accusations you can’t back up or Ill sue you.”
And just so we’re clear-you’re the cheater here. I’ve got all the evidence.”
is tone was calm but sharp. Protective.
hadn’t felt that in so long,
wenty minutes later, trial started.
s we kept presenting evidence, Cade’s face got darker and darker.
utcome was set from the start. He’d leave with nothing. This was just a formality.
Then the judge announced the verdict, Cade crumpled.
Reese, I can’t lose you. I can’t go back to being broke!”
out things off with Sloane! We can raise Lily together! Please don’t divorce me!”
laughed. Shook my head.
We’re done. What you do with your mistress-not my problem.”
As for Lily, the second you abandoned her, you stopped being her father
11 raise her. Don’t worry about it.”
And I’m starting a new life. Don’t contact me again.”
turned and walked toward the exit. Cade screamed behind me.
Reese, you’ll never find a guy as good as me!”
rolled my eyes. Finally spotted the person I was looking for outside.

‘Miss Caldwell? Something wrong?”
Finn looked at me. Hopeful but trying to play it cool.
opened my mouth. Nothing came out.
His face fell. He pressed his lips together, turned, and walked away.
watched him go. My chest felt tight-I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
f I didn’t take this shot now-would I ever get another chance?
clenched my fists and finally shouted.
We met again, didn’t we? That counts as fate, right? Can I get your number?!”
inn stopped.
ust for a second.
hen kept walking.
lowered my head. Guess it really was nothing.
ut then-a smiling face appeared right in front of me.
Yeah. But you gotta keep it forever.”
ne year later, Finn and I got married in Sedona.
fter I told him about Lily, he didn’t even flinch.
t first, I thought hearing I was divorced with a kid would scare him off.
ut he said this:
You loved someone enough to put up with seven years of cheating. That’s loyalty.”
You couldn’t stand by and let a kid suffer, even though she was your husband’s bastard. That’s kindness.”
And you told me the truth, even though you risked losing me. That’s honesty.”
A girl who’s loyal, kind, and honest? Why the hell wouldn’t I want you?”
rom that day on, we got closer and closer. And eventually-we ended up here.
loane? Heard the loan sharks broke her legs. She’s done.
s for Cade?
on’t care anymore.
fter the wedding, Finn and I were lying on the beach, soaking up the sun.
le was playing with Lily’s hair when he asked me something.
If Cade had never cheated on you… Lily wouldn’t exist. And we wouldn’t have met, right?”
He was right.
Maybe if none of that had happened, I never would’ve crossed paths with Finn.

But he was missing one thing.
I knew for a fact-if I could go back and choose again, I’d still fall for Cade. Still put up with all of it.
Because back then, I loved him that much.
And if Cade got to choose again? He’d still love Sloane. Still cheat.
to matter how many do-overs we got, we’d make the same choices we made back then.
hat’s just how it goes.
eeing me go quiet. Finn pulled me closer. Sounded a little jealous.
What, thinking about him got you all quiet?”
laughed. Pressed my face into his chest.
Too bad we don’t get do-overs.”
e kissed the top of my head. Murmured, “Thank god we don’t.”
leaned back. Watched the waves roll in.
ven years with Cade taught me what I don’t want.
ne year with Finn taught me what I do.
le past? It’s done.
nd I’m finally free.
