Chapter 4
I opened my phone, texted the PI
[Can you get to Hawaii?]
PI: [Yeah. When?]
[Now. ASAP.]
PI: [What do you need?]
[Video of them together. Intimate stuff. As clear as possible.]
PI: [Got it.]
[How much?]
PI: [Round-trip flights plus hotel, about 20k. Service fee 10k. Total 30k.]
Now I’d need to pull out 30k.
That’d leave me with only 20k.
But it didn’t matter. If I could get the evidence, make Ryan walk away with nothing, the 30k was worth every penny.
[Okay. I’ll transfer it now.]
PI: [Received. I’ll leave tomorrow.]
I set my phone down, stared at the ceiling.
I thought back to five years ago, the day he proposed.
“Marry me. I’ll treat you right for the rest of my life.”
He knelt on one knee, ring in hand, eyes full of sincerity.
I cried and said yes.
First year of marriage, he really was good to me. Gave me everything, bought me everything.
Second year, I got pregnant. He said: “Quit your job. Stay home, take care of yourself. I’ll provide.”
I believed him. Quit my job.
Third year, Jamie was born. Ryan got busier, came home later, grew colder.
Fourth year, he started saying things like “You’re spending my money,” “All you do is ask for money.”
Fifth year, he cheated.
Five years. Turned the promise of “I’ll take care of you” into the accusation of “You’re spending my money.”
Was I stupid?
Yeah.
I set my phone down, texted Ms. Hartley: [Got the evidence.]
Ms. Hartley: [That fast?]
[Yeah, HR confirmed it-no company retreat. He took vacation days. PI got video.]
Ms. Hartley: [Perfect. Send me the footage.]
I forwarded it.
Ms. Hartley replied after watching: [Flawless. This is enough to leave him with nothing.]
[When do I file?]
Ms. Hartley. [Wait till he’s back. Confront him, then hit him with the evidence. Leave him speechless.]
[Okay.]
I lay back on the bed, stared at the ceiling.
Two more days till Ryan got home.
When he came back, he’d keep pretending. Keep saying “the retreat was exhausting,” “Hawaii was gorgeous,” “next time I’ll take you.”
And I’d smile, accept his cheap “souvenir,” then when he was at his most relaxed-blindside him with everything.
His face was going to be priceless.
