Atticus's Odyssey: Reincarnated Into A Playground novel Chapter 1599

Chapter 1599: Core

"So where did you say this place was again? Another territory?"

Ozeroth asked with a small frown.

"The core of the Span." Whisker replied.

"The core...?"

"Think of it like this. Our world, and every other territory in the Span, sits on the surface of a planet. Where we’re going is the core."

"And who rules it?"

Atticus asked as Whisker activated the portal, causing it to ignite into an ominous pool of black.

"The Eternal Span."

"The Span..."

Unlike the Verge, the Span hadn’t shown himself even after many months had passed since Atticus entered the Span.

While he was glad he didn’t have to deal with a second Verge, he couldn’t tell whether that absence was a good thing or a bad one.

’I can’t gauge him.’

The fact that the Span hadn’t revealed himself meant Atticus couldn’t determine for certain whether he was ally or enemy.

"Let’s go."

At his words, they nodded and stepped into the portal one after the other.

...

Atticus felt as though he were a streak of light racing through an endless void. All around him, countless others moved through the darkness as well, each of them heading toward the same distant point.

’The center.’

A sudden flare erupted ahead, swallowing his vision in blinding light. Moments later, sensation returned to his body, and Atticus slowly opened his eyes.

"Aren Gosmack. Purpose?"

"To participate in the resource wars."

"Pass."

"Hugo Newborn. Purpose?"

"To fight in the resource wars."

"Pass."

"Joranomo Nigh. Purpose?"

"T-to visit a relative."

"Fail."

’What is this...?’

Atticus found himself standing in the middle of a queue that stretched endlessly behind him. Similar lines flanked both sides, each leading toward different tables manned by figures with tired, irritated expressions.

’There they are.’

After a few seconds of searching, Atticus spotted the others standing in different queues some distance away.

Each of them wore the same faintly puzzled expression, clearly just as uncertain about the situation as he was.

’It looks like an access point. They’re checking us before we enter the Core.’

That conclusion settled in after a brief moment of observation.

The figures seated at the tables asked every person the same question, their purpose, and based on the answer, they were either allowed through or turned away.

Once Atticus understood that, he relaxed slightly. There were no immediate threats.

’But why is it so silent?’

Their numbers should have been in the thousands, yet a deathlike stillness hung over the area, and everyone kept to themselves as though afraid to draw attention.

Whisker, Ozeroth, and Ozerra seemed to have noticed the same thing and likewise chose to remain silent. Atticus followed suit. Before long, the line crept forward until he found himself at the front.

The humanoid woman seated before him lazily picked up a sheet of paper from a nearby pile, her eyes scanning it without much interest.

"...Atticus Ravenstein?"

She jolted upright, staring at the paper as though she couldn’t quite believe what she was seeing. But her loud outbursts had reached the others.

"Atticus Ravenstein!?"

"How is he here?"

"Wow! It’s really the Atticus Ravenstein! Slayer of gods! You were amazing in the ascension games!"
