Grace pressed a hand to her chest, her voice tight with accusation.
“I’ve taken care of you for so many years. Even your sister got married before you. Have you never thought about why?”
“Mom, I understand what you’re trying to say.”
Tessa drew in a deep breath. “I know she married earlier than I did, but that was her choice, wasn’t it?”
“If it weren’t for you, I never would’ve pushed her to marry early.”
Grace let out a cold snort. “I only wanted to make sure you’d be taken care of for the rest of your life. Tell me, was that wrong?”
“And I want a life of my own. Is that wrong?”
Tessa finally pushed back. “And I never said I wouldn’t come back. I just want to know why you suddenly need me home right this minute.
“We’re both adults. I have my own life. Is that so strange? I can’t follow your arrangements in everything.”
“So that’s it—you think you’ve grown wings now.”
Her mother’s voice trembled with hurt.
She had never expected the daughter she adored to speak to her this way.
It seemed Aurora hadn’t been wrong about her.
Maybe the problem really was in her parenting.
Grace had refused to admit it before, but now she realized that if she kept denying it, she’d only face more trouble in the future.
“Mom, that’s not what I meant.”
Tessa felt exhausted.
She had been in nonstop discussions with Sean lately, her nerves stretched thin the whole time.
And now Grace wouldn’t stop pressing her.
At that moment, frustration crept into her chest, though she couldn’t afford to let it show.
After all, Grace still held the shares she needed.
