Chapter 744 Samantha Will Come Back
Elowen simply smiled and gave Emma’s head a gentle pat
About half an hour later, the savory aroma of cooking drifted from the kitchen.
Just then, footsteps echoed in the courtyard. Betty was back. –
Before she could even set foot inside, Robert’s shouting cut through the air. “So you finally decided to show up! It’s past noon and lunch isn’t even made. Are you trying to starve me to death?”
“I went to town to get the money,” Betty said, her voice heavy with exhaustion and hurt. “The roads we bad, and Ethan wanted to walk himself. He’s so slow, and he took a nasty spilt halfway there. His knees all scraped up…”
Robert scoffed. “Oh, so now you’re blaming your own son! What does Ethan know? He’s only three! It’s who’s useless!” He paused, then demanded, “How much did you get? Hand it over!”
Betty hesitated, her voice dropping. “I got… twenty dollars.”
“Why so little?!” Robert bellowed. “That’s less than last time! Are you pocketing cash behind my back?”
Guilt flickered in Betty’s voice, and she spoke even softer. “Thomas was hurt while he was out gathering the herbs. I had to buy him some medicine, so that cost a little…”
Furious, Robert lashed out with even nastier insults. “You utter fool! He’s a grown man! A little injury he on its own. Why waste money on medicine? You’re just throwing cash away! How did I end up married t such a spendthrift woman?”
“But we have plenty of money now,” Betty protested weakly. “The guest gave us a gold bracelet, enough to last us a long time. The medicine didn’t cost much. Besides, Thomas is Samantha’s-”
Robert cut her off with a cruel laugh. “Samantha, Samantha! How many years has she been gone now? Sh probably found herself some rich nobleman out there and married him already. She doesn’t remember us, and she definitely doesn’t want Thomas anymore!”
Bang!
Nearby, a door was flung open with tremendous force.
Robert’s tirade stopped dead
Wiping away her tears, Betty looked over, her voice trembling Thomas when did you wake up?
Thomas stood in the doorway, his face dark and menacing. He eminecrated every single word. Samanth
will come back.”
Confronted by Thomas, Robert’s bravado crumbled slightly, though he sull muttered a stubborn reply “Easy for you to say. Year after year, nothing but money comes back Not even a single letter
Thomas said nothing
go get our
guest.”
Inside the room, Elowen had overheard every word of their conversation.
She waited quietly for a moment until Betty stepped in. Betty’s eyes were slightly red, but she managed to force a smile for her guest,
Noticing Emma by the bed, Betty couldn’t help but scold her. “You silly girl, our guest needs her rest. Aren’t you just bothering her by staying here?”
Emma’s head instantly drooped.
‘I was feeling a bit lonely,” Elowen said gently. “I asked Emma to stay. I’m glad to have her company.”
At that, Emma puffed her chest out proudly again.
Deciding not to press the matter with the child, Betty turned to Elowen. “Um… lunch is ready. Would you >refer to eat in here, or would you like to come out?”
I’ll go outside,” Elowen said. “It’s not good to stay cooped up in bed all day. Emma, give me a hand?”
Emma rushed forward, carefully supporting Elowen. Still unable to put any weight on her right leg, Elowen had to edge her way out of the room one slow, painful step-at a time. Small and frail as Emma was he held on tightly, her little hands gripping Elowen’s arm as if terrified she might fall.
When they stepped outside, the sun was already high in the sky.
Clowen’s eyes immediately fell upon the young man standing by the kitchen door. He was a bit shorter han Cassian, but still tall and broad-shouldered. He had tanned skin and sharp, angular features, with leep-set eyes and hair loosely tied back. Judging by his features, he wasn’t from Avenlor; he clearly carried
Nordian blood.
Elowen let her gaze sweep past him without lingering.
With Emma’s help, she sat down on a stone bench in the courtyard. Across the yard, Robert was crouching by the other side of the kitchen, wolfing down his food and completely avoiding Thomas’s gaze
Betty brought the dishes to the table, then ladled a bowl of soup for Elowen, offering a strained simile
Drink up, dear. It’ll do your leg some good.”
Elowen thanked her and took the bowl.
After lunch, Robert tossed his utensils aside and headed our for a walk In the courtyard. Emma was watching Ethan; the toddler was chasing a hen around while Emma scrambled to keep up with hum
Betty stayed behind to clear the table.
Basking in the warm sun against the stone bench. Flowen asked. ‘Is Samantha you eldest daughter?”
Betty paused mid-wipe, her hands freezing over the dishes. She looked down and sighed. Yes, Samantha is my eldest. She’s twenty-two now. When she was nineteen, she found Thomas by the river and saved his life. She spent a whole month gathering herbs in the mountains just to nurse him back from the brink of
