The line went dead with a sharp click, echoing in the silence that followed.

In the grand hall, a sea of bewildered faces turned toward Ethan, their expressions a mix of confusion and concern.

His parents, caught in a whirlwind of panic, urged him with frantic voices. “The ceremony has already begun! What are you waiting for? The Collins won’t be attending the wedding; they’ve left the country for good! Why are you putting yourself through this agony? Just step inside!”

His mother’s voice trembled with urgency, “We called you at least twenty times on the day they left, pleading for you to come and say goodbye. You didn’t answer even once! Finish the wedding first, and then we can all go to Spain later. You can explain everything to Uncle Collins then.”

Each word pierced through Ethan’s heart like boiling oil, searing his insides.

The realization that he might never see Avery again sent a shiver down his spine, causing his hands to tremble uncontrollably.

“Ethan!” The officiant’s voice rang out for the third time, yet he remained rooted to the spot, unwilling to move an inch. Instead, he desperately attempted to call back, his heart racing.

The automated message, “This phone is currently turned off,” only fueled his frustration further. He quickly dialed Avery’s number, his heart pounding in his chest.

This time, he was met with a cold, impersonal “cannot be completed” message—she had blocked him.

A wave of anger crashed over him, throbbing painfully at his temples. In a fit of desperation, he opened his messaging app and began typing furiously, sending her a flurry of messages.

But one by one, notifications of “message failed to send” appeared on the screen, each one crushing what little hope remained within him.

Feeling defeated, he turned to leave, but was abruptly halted by the sight of Sophia, radiant in her wedding dress, standing at the exit.

Before Ethan could muster a response, his father interjected, his voice a desperate plea.

“No, no, Sophia! Ethan just found out about Avery moving away, and he’s a bit shaken up. Just give him a moment to process everything.”

Sophia’s eyes narrowed, the tension in the room palpable.

“You want to delay OUR WEDDING for AVERY? Are you out of your mind? I’ll tell you this right now—if you walk out that door, we are DONE!!”
