On the way home, Qi Taiguo was silent, his lips pursed, lost in thought.
"Is your heart aching?" Cheng Su sat on the back seat of the bicycle, hugging his waist, and leaned forward to ask.
Qi Taiguo nodded absentmindedly.
"I thought I’d done enough, but it’s still not enough. The child ended up like this, in and out of the hospital. If Platoon Leader Zheng finds out, how will he blame me?" Qi Taiguo said self-reproachfully.
"That kind of thinking is wrong!" Cheng Su said: "You’ve actually done really well, although life is tough, they’re still holding together. Without your support, they would probably have been unable to survive long ago!"
"But, it’s still not enough!"
"There’s no ’enough’ or ’not enough’ here. When we help others, we have to act within our means. Your monthly allowance is limited, how much can you give away? You have family responsibilities too." Cheng Su said calmly: "Sacrifice on the battlefield is indeed tragic, but when you headed to the battlefield, didn’t you have this mental preparation?"
Qi Taiguo remained silent, gripping the bicycle handles tightly.
"We are grateful to Platoon Leader Zheng, so we do what we can to take care of his family, but it can only be within our capabilities; it’s not our responsibility. Taiguo, being human means each of us must be responsible for ourselves, we can’t just rely on others."
"I know, I’m just upset." Qi Taiguo replied gloomily.
Cheng Su patted his back and said, "I feel sad too, but this can’t be helped."
"How about I set aside forty yuan for them each month in the future?" Qi Taiguo hesitated and said.
He used to give them money, but actually, he didn’t do it every month.
Now it seems that Little Yu’s family is really struggling; if he doesn’t do something, he can’t feel at ease.
