The plan kept changing, cutting short the time to return to my hometown, which only made Cheng Su busier. Business, various summary meetings and annual meetings needed to be held, and the new home had to be slowly arranged and tidied up, never stopping.
While Cheng Su was busy with household chores and business, Qi Taiguo was busy with military duties. During this period, they hardly had any chance to meet.
Sometimes Qi Taiguo would be on duty at the army, either going out early and returning late at night, at which time Cheng Su was either asleep or just waking up, so they saw each other less during these times.
Qi Taiguo was busy not without reason. The newly appointed Regimental Commander Shen, for some unknown reason either favored him or some other reason, unexpectedly entrusted many tasks to him, and others saw him as greatly valued.
The most jealous, of course, was Dong Jun.
Watching Qi Taiguo come out of Regimental Commander Shen’s office with a stack of documents, Dong Jun was envious. His father-in-law had stepped down, and now Regimental Commander Mai had retired too. His position hadn’t moved for years, feeling stuck, wanting to latch onto Regimental Commander Shen.
But Shen didn’t seem to accept his advances. Instead, he gave Qi Taiguo significant authority, valuing him to the extent of possibly surpassing the battalion commander above him.
How could Dong Jun’s heart be thrilled with this disparity?
Upon seeing Qi Taiguo, he couldn’t help but mock, saying, "Deputy Battalion Commander Qi’s methods are quite remarkable, gaining Regimental Commander Shen’s favor so quickly."
Qi Taiguo glanced over at him, returning the sarcasm: "Deputy Battalion Commander Dong’s expression reminds me of the ancient palace’s concubines, the vivid image of someone resentful about not being favored by the emperor!"
Dong Jun’s face darkened, pursing his lips, then coldly retorted, "Don’t be complacent. When it comes to the incident involving Gao Linbing, who knows if there’s something unclear about you? You two are such good friends; could it be you knew his identity long ago and didn’t report it?"
