For several days in a row, Cheng Su had been getting ready for the New Year holiday, busy delivering New Year goods, organizing the year-end party and handing out bonuses. Because she kept thinking that once the New Year came she could finally meet up and reunite with Qi Taiguo, even though she was busy, she still felt full of energy all over; this was probably what it meant to be filled with drive when you had something to look forward to.
As the New Year drew nearer, the weather got colder and colder. On the twenty‑seventh, Cheng Su cleaned the house thoroughly inside and out, then called her parents’ home. On the twenty‑eighth, she locked the door and headed to Guangcheng together with her son and her parents‑in‑law.
It happened to be the Spring Festival travel rush, and there were especially many people returning home from Guangcheng. The crowds were packed shoulder to shoulder, a dense sea of heads, each person hefting big and small bags of luggage, their faces full of anxiety yet tinged with a bit of expectation.
Of course—New Year was coming. Who didn’t want the whole family reunited, happily celebrating the New Year together!
With Qi Xiaoqi on her back, Cheng Su turned to Father Qi and said, "Dad, stay close, okay? There are way too many people going home this time, don’t get squeezed away and lost."
"Yeah, yeah." Father Qi hurriedly agreed, and seeing that dark, surging mass of people really broadened his horizons.
There really were so many people. It truly was a big city!
Mother Qi felt even more flustered. She clutched tightly at Father Qi’s clothes, afraid that if they got separated she wouldn’t be able to find anyone again. Besides, she wasn’t familiar with this big city at all and had no idea how to get to that apartment of Cheng Su’s, so staying close was the safest way.
Although Cheng Su was reminding them out loud, she also slowed her pace a bit, because there were just too many people. If you didn’t pay attention and lost each other, even if you could find them again, it would take time and effort.
Once they made it out of the station, Cheng Su hailed a taxi by the roadside and headed straight home.
"It’s really cold. How come it’s even colder here than in Qing City, and there isn’t even any snow!" Once in the car, Mother Qi rubbed her hands as she spoke.
The taxi driver lifted his eyes to the rearview mirror and, in somewhat off‑accent Mandarin, said, "Of course it’s cold. It just rained, it’s a damp cold. You folks are from out of town, right?"
