Chapter 165 A Pawn for Ratings
Fiona’s crew, of course, had no legal authority to punish Caleb. General Hartwell, however, did.
Michael frowned. “But this is going to seriously tank our show’s reputation.”
“How so? We simply have no way to send him off. We were just robbed ourselves, as everyone knows. Just say our budget is currently too strained to arrange transport for one individual. But we’ll assign him two extra Vanguards so the public can keep an eye on him.
Michael’s furrowed brow suddenly smoothed out. “You’re using Caleb to farm engagement?
First, they’d used Layla as a narrative foil. Now it was Caleb’s turn.
The only question was which one Caleb would be in the control group for.
Layla, at least, had managed to rehabilitate her image. Caleb would probably be beyond redemption for life.
Stealing on a reality show, on a live broadcast. Caleb was profoundly stupid and wicked.
Even if he got away with it, he couldn’t use the item anyway.
Even if Hanna hadn’t exposed him, the moment the Vanguards were reassigned and every contestant got their own, the viewers would have figured it out anyway.
“You’re not as slow as you look. Now go issue that statement. Make the wording as earnest as possible. I want everyone to feel our helplessness.”
Michael could only comply.
Caleb had dug his own grave. No one could accuse Michael of being unfair.
Back on the Vanguard feed, Hanna had just thrust a bundle into Caleb’s arms. “Get out. Go far away. I don’t want to see you ever again.”
The moment Caleb saw Hanna, his temper flared. He clutched the bundle and made a move to charge at her, but Blaze clamped a hand on him. “She told you to get out. Are you deaf?”
Layla pulled Hanna behind her, shielding her with her body.
Hanna had made her choice, and for now, that was enough. For the rest, someone needed to step in and lend a hand.
“Do you think my slaps don’t hurt?” Layla stared coldly at Caleb.
Caleb despised females. He despised them from the depths of his soul.
But Layla’s actions, and especially the force of her palm across his face, had put a genuine chill of fear in him.
He didn’t quite dare to cross her openly. Even as he cursed her in his head as a shrew, under the combined pressure from Layla and Blaze, he tucked his bundle and walked.

Before he left, he shot Hanna a venomous glare. “Just you wait. You dare betray me? I won’t let you get away with this!”
“Oh? What did you say?” Blaze brandished a fist and took a step toward him.
Caleb didn’t dare linger. He turned tail and fled.
Only when he was a long way off did he spit on the ground. “And she says she’s not messing around with other males. That Blaze practically has his eyeballs glued to her. If she wasn’t warming his bed, why would he be so protective?”
The production team had just released their apology statement. While a large portion of the fanbase remained unconvinced, a wave of paid bots had started to smooth things over, and the outraged viewer were gradually coming around.
The production team had also kept their word, assigning a dedicated Vanguard to monitor Caleb./
Considering that several contestants still had no Vanguard at all, assigning one specifically to Caleb demonstrated the production’s profound commitment to his well-being.
With Caleb gone, Hanna felt the weight slide off her shoulders. She stood watching his retreating figure, and suddenly her eyes reddened.
Layla’s heart ached for her. She wrapped Hanna in a hug, offering quiet comfort.
After only a few murmured words, Hanna seemed to steady herself.
“I’ll go get the jerky Caleb stole from you, so you can take it back.”
She turned toward the tent.
Layla reached out to stop her, but she moved too quickly.
“Hanna, wait!” Blaze called out just before she disappeared inside.
Hanna paused, turning back to look at him.
“So, can I move into your tent now?” Blaze asked.
Layla’s eyes lit up instantly. She enjoyed gossip too, especially this kind of drama. It was just so thrilling to watch.
“Blaze, I…” Hanna hesitated. She was still raw from everything that had just happened. Blaze had been with her the whole time, always on her side, but she was still shaken.
“I understand what you’re thinking. I’m not asking you to date me. It’s like… Yates. He lives at Layla’s place,
you know?”
Hanna wasn’t sure what he was getting at, but she nodded silently. “I know.”
“Layla isn’t dating Yates. She just took him in, you know?”
