A flicker of guilt crossed Oliver’s expression.

He stole a cautious glance at Layla, his voice tinged with a carefully crafted note of wounded innocence. “Promise you won’t get mad if I tell you?”
Layla remained silent, only a slight furrow of her brow betraying her reaction.
Seeing that, Oliver abandoned any further attempt at negotiation and let the words spill out.
“Remember my initial proposal for collaboration? It’s because the royal family lost something vital a long time ago. The most likely place it could be is within that marked purple zone.”
A glint of amusement lit Layla’s clear eyes as she regarded him.
“Let me get this straight. You sought me out… to help you retrieve a lost royal artifact?” she said, feigning deep thought.
Panic instantly washed over Oliver. “No, no, that’s not it at all!” he protested, shaking his head vehemently.
The words came out in a rushed, earnest tumble. “I came to you because… I like you. Really.”
His striking eyes were wide with a genuine fear of being misunderstood.
Watching his flustered sincerity, Layla couldn’t maintain the charade.
A soft laugh escaped her. “Relax, I’m just teasing you.”
The genuine warmth in her smile allowed Oliver to relax, though a thread of nervousness remained.
His initial motives hadn’t been entirely pure, and her mention of them stirred old anxieties.
“Layla, my feelings are real. Yes, at first, I admired your capabilities, but-” Normally articulate, he found his usual eloquence deserting him under her gaze.
Layla raised a gentle hand, stopping him. “I know. I was only joking. I believe you.”
Her reassurance allowed him to exhale, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly, though not completely dissipating.
Turning her attention to the map in her hands, Layla rested her chin thoughtfully. A decision crystallized after a moment’s consideration. She would take a team of three.

Shane, still recovering, was out of the question-he needed rest.
The question was who to leave behind.
Her first instinct was George, given his perpetual bickering with Oliver.
However, her eyes traced the purple-circled area on the map, noting the annotations about surrounding swamps and toxic miasma.
George’s particular skills might prove invaluable there.
After weighing the options, she settled on taking Oliver, George, and Carson.
While Oliver and George were competent, Carson, as the wolf alpha, brought unmatched observational skills and instinctive caution to the table.
Her mind made up, Layla announced the plan that evening over dinner.
Liam accepted the news of staying behind with a simple nod. “Just be careful out there,” he urged, his concern evident.
Layla’s fingers brushed the tracking necklace at her throat, a confident smile touching her lips. “Don’t worry. I won’t take unnecessary risks.”
She had no intention of walking blindly into a death trap.
If things looked too dangerous, she’d pull back immediately.
Some of the worry left Liam’s expression. “The Galactic Guard patrols aren’t far. Send the signal at the first sign of real trouble, and I’ll be there.”
Layla nodded, then shifted her focus to Shane. “Your only job is to focus on getting better. Don’t waste energy worrying about us.”
A shadow of concern passed over Shane’s typically serene features, but he obediently dipped his head. “Please be safe. I would worry,” he said softly, the admission hanging in the air.
The quiet vulnerability in his response sent a warm flutter through Layla’s chest.
He really is the sweetest one.

Under the cover of night, Layla settled beside Shane. In the dim glow of the room, their eyes met and held.
“I’ve heard rumors that the royal family lost an energy field,” Shane whispered, breaking the
