Chapter 407 He’s Terrifying

News that Oliver had also arrived stirred complicated feelings across Arnold’s face. “He made it into this forest, too?”
Carson caught every shift in Arnold’s expression. A faint, knowing smile tugged at his lips. “What, you want
to see him?”
Raw, burning hatred flashed across Arnold’s features the second the question landed. “If it weren’t for him. I would never have gotten cast out of the royal family’s elite guard. I’m going to kill him. This is my perfect chance.”
Carson stepped quietly backward, watching Arnold spiral into wild rage. “Prince Oliver holds high status. Why would he go out of his way to set you up? Own up to the mistakes you yourself made.”
Arnold refused to see it that way. He shot Carson a vicious glare, his voice rough and hoarse. “You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Arnold glanced over toward Zeke, and conflict flickered in his eyes. “If that rotten brat Oliver hadn’t existed, Zeke never would’ve ended up like this.”
A thought crossed Layla’s mind from her hidden spot in the shadows.
She burned to know what Oliver had actually done to earn such fierce hatred from Arnold.
Carson lifted one eyebrow, held Arnold’s gaze steady, and spoke with open scorn to goad him. “What could Prince Oliver have possibly done to you?”
The taunt hit its mark.
Arnold slipped fully into a frenzied state.
His teeth ground together as he ranted like a man unhinged. “It wasn’t like that. He put me in charge of watching over the energy field. Yet he never warned me-that thing warps people’s minds and pushes hem to make terrible, irrational choices.”
Layla’s eyes widened in quiet shock.
The energy field carried such terrible side effects.
Oliver had never brought any of this up to them on his own.
Layla thought back on Oliver’s usual personality, and a realization settled over her.
Most likely, Oliver had known nothing about these risks himself.
If he had, he would have warned her and Carson, even if he said nothing to the guards.
Pity welled up inside Layla for both Zeke and Arnold.
Still, a question lingered in her head.

If the energy field twists people’s minds, why hasn’t the royal family set up some kind of protection against it?
She kept watching the standoff between Arnold and Carson.

Carson reached the same conclusion Layla had. His tone turned cold as he pressed the man. “The energy field has such dangerous side effects. Why didn’t the royal family put up some kind of protective barrier around it?”
Confusion showed briefly on Arnold’s face.
Then he waved one arm and stumbled a step backward. “The royal family never cared whether people like us lived or died. They did this on purpose.”
Carson saw Arnold drowning in his own bitter delusions, and he wasted no more words.
He drew back his fist and landed a hard punch square on Arnold’s face.
Arnold had no time to dodge. The blow knocked him flat onto the ground.
He lifted his head, eyes blazing red, full of venom and unbridled fury as he stared up at Carson. “You’re
apdogs for the royal family! You came down here just to hunt for the energy field, didn’t you?”
Carson crouched over him, fingers closing around Arnold’s throat. The muscles in his arm tensed, and he wore a mocking half-smile. “I don’t work for the royal family, but I am here looking for the energy field.”
Mockery twisted Arnold’s mouth after hearing Carson’s reply. “Why pretend otherwise? Just admit you’re heir lapdog.
I’m the only one who knows where the energy field is. Get down on your knees and beg for forgiveness.”
Layla listened to his ridiculous demand, and contempt pulled at her lips.
He actually expected Carson to kneel and apologize to him.
The miasma had clearly rotted his brain.
Carson did not hesitate. He drove his boot hard into Arnold’s chest.
Arnold went flying backward and coughed up blood streaked black.
Layla understood right away. The miasma poison had spread deep inside his body.
He no longer had any strength left to fight back.
Layla stepped out from her hiding place.
Arnold showed no surprise at seeing a second person.
A cruel smirk spread across his face, and he stared at Layla with obvious lust in his eyes. “Oh, look, a pretty girl. Did you bring her here for me?”
He burst out laughing right after he spoke.
