Bai Su got home from a busy day at the lab. After washing up, she came out to find Yelias already in bed, peacefully reading a book. He had changed into his pajamas, clearly having washed up as well.
Bai Su froze for a moment, still not quite used to the schedule where Yelias and Lu Tingyan took turns spending the night with her.
She lifted the covers and rolled into his arms.
Yelias keenly sensed her mood. "Hm? What’s wrong?"
His crisp, cool scent carried pleasant notes of cedarwood.
It was faint, but very comforting.
Her heart aching for him, Bai Su hugged him tightly. "Yelias..."
Her voice was a little hoarse.
Yelias confirmed that her spirits were indeed low and began to release calming pheromones. He wrapped the blanket around her back, bundling her up like a small child as he pulled her into his arms.
Bai Su snuggled securely into his embrace.
Yelias tucked her in, smoothed her hair to make sure his arm wasn’t pinning it down, and only then did he relax. He began to rub the base of her ears, stroking along her rabbit ears to gently massage her head.
Little rabbits loved having those spots rubbed the most.
Sure enough, Bai Su let out a contented hum and unconsciously narrowed her eyes as she began to relax.
The corners of Yelias’s lips curved up. "Can you tell me what happened now? Did someone give you a hard time at the lab?"
Bai Su shook her head. "No, it’s not that. At the lab, I heard people talking about your past."
A flicker of light crossed Yelias’s eyes, but he continued to soothe his little rabbit. "I see."
’It seems all the trouble I went to get her into the lab wasn’t for nothing.’
Still lost in her own emotions, his little rabbit didn’t notice anything amiss. "They told me everything about your past..."
"I feel so sad. It seems like you’re all always protecting me, taking care of me, constantly accommodating me. But I know so little about you all, and I haven’t cared for you nearly enough..."
Yelias found her thoughts both adorable and endearing, making him want to pull her into his very being.
His voice deepened unconsciously. "You silly girl. You’re my wife. It’s my duty to take care of you and protect you. We do all of this willingly because we love you so much."
Bai Su shook her head stubbornly. "Physiologically, you’re males, so you instinctively protect me."
"But emotionally, we’re equals. My heart aches for you, too. I want to protect you, take care of you, and help you carry your emotional burdens."
Yelias was stunned. A tumultuous emotion surged in his chest, leaving him aching and at a loss.
’How could a female ever say that she and a male are equals...?’
Yelias could barely contain the tide of love surging in his heart. He wanted to ensnare her in his web and possess her all for himself.
His spider silk slithered silently beneath her loose pajamas, wrapping around her neck, chest, and wrists, pressing her seamlessly into his embrace.
Through the empathic link of his silk, he felt her emotions, and his actions suddenly froze.
Certain long-buried memories gradually surfaced in his mind.
He rarely ever thought back on his youth.
From the day he was born, his extraordinary talent made him the pride of his entire family.
Other children might have been born with no spiritual power at all, but he was born already possessing Level 3 Spiritual Power.
By the age of five, he could already skillfully enter his Beastification State and maintain perfect control over it.
While other White Spider Beastmen his age needed to be at least fifteen to deftly dissect minuscule objects with their forelimb-scalpels or tie knots with forceps, he could do it at six.
Within the entire Lanton Family, he was undoubtedly the brightest star. Everyone placed high hopes on him, viewing him as the future heir.
"That child Yelias is both beautiful and intelligent. Truly a gift from the Beast God."
"He inherited his grandfather’s talent. Forget the Lanton Family—in the entire medical world, you’d be hard-pressed to find another child as gifted as him."
"He actually mastered his Companion Skill at five and acquired Skill 1 at seven! It’s unbelievable!"
"A child as bright as him picks up everything fast. Even if he hadn’t gone into medicine, he would have succeeded in any field and become a titan of the industry."
He’d heard countless remarks just like these.
Throughout his childhood, he always excelled in every subject, becoming a role model for all the other children in the family.
But at some point, those words of praise became a heavy burden, crushing him to the point he could barely breathe.
"He’s Yelias. Of course he can learn it in a day."
"He gets an S in every subject. Isn’t that normal?"
"He’s a role model for all of us!"
"Every female dreams of becoming his wife."
All that praise carried weight, and in his twentieth year, it morphed into a mountain that finally crushed him.
It was a simple procedure, but because of his mistake, his sister died on the operating table.
Before that operation, he had already performed three surgeries in a row and was mentally exhausted.
But, confident in his own abilities, he went into the operating room anyway.
The moment his sister’s heart stopped, his mind went blank. It felt as if the entire world had frozen still.
’How could I have failed such a simple surgery?’
