Chapter 303: Chapter 300: Yelias’s Insecurity

Yelias immediately straightened his posture. "I later discovered that by using my grandfather’s identity to get close to you, I could get a more objective look at how you felt about me."

"Besides, you’re surrounded by so many exceptional men. I didn’t have much of a competitive edge, so I used my grandfather’s identity to try and persuade you to be with me."

Bai Su let out a laugh of pure exasperation. Just thinking about how she’d been played for a fool still made her seethe with anger.

Yelias looked at Bai Su earnestly. "Susu, I’m sorry. I know I was wrong, and I’ll never deceive you like this again. I apologize, and I’m willing to accept any punishment. Can you forgive me?"

Bai Su said, "There won’t be a next time. If I ever catch you lying to me again, I’ll punch a hole right through your stomach."

Yelias nodded obediently. "So, you’re not mad at me anymore?"

Bai Su replied, "I’m fine. The anger has passed."

Yelias breathed a sigh of relief, but at the same time, he felt a growing sense of guilt.

He gingerly took hold of Bai Su’s arm, pressing his forehead against it. "Susu..."

’Susu is so wonderful.’

’How could I have ever brought myself to lie to her?’

’I deserve to die!’

A deadly glint flashed in Yelias’s eyes; he had the sudden urge to use his spider silk to slit his own throat.

Bai Su’s expression darkened as she stopped him. "Alright, that’s enough. I don’t have time to console you."

Yelias relented, though he seemed a bit disappointed. "Susu, how could you forgive me so easily? I still had more I wanted to say..."

Bai Su was almost amused enough to laugh. "Fine. Then say it."

Yelias clung to her arm and continued with the speech he’d been preparing for days. "I’m sorry. There was actually another reason I didn’t confess. My original plan was that if you never found out, I’d just keep it a secret. Then, when the time was right, I’d make up a story about Grandpa’s death and have him exit our lives."

Bai Su raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

Yelias said, "I was scared... I was afraid that if I confessed and you found out I’d lied, you would just turn on me completely."

"Susu, I feel like I don’t really know you that well."

"Sometimes you seem so good-natured, but the cautionary tale of Li Chenlin made me realize you actually have a lot of personal boundaries. I wasn’t sure if deception was one of them, and whether I’d be kicked to the curb if you found out."

"There’s also the fact that... I have to admit, you’re just so exceptional. I feel like I’m constantly struggling to keep up with you, which makes me feel deeply insecure. That’s another reason I couldn’t bring myself to confess."

"And it’s not just me. All of us have only started to become better and better because you’ve been leading the way."

"We all have pasts we’d rather keep hidden, our own dark sides and imperfections."

"But you’re different. It’s like you were born dazzling, possessing a kind of charisma that makes everyone look up to you."

"I don’t know how to describe this feeling... it’s like I can never find a reason why you would need me and no one else."

"I just... inexplicably became your Beast Husband. It wasn’t because I was exceptional, or because you loved me so much, or because you couldn’t live without me. It was only because of my lie. I took advantage of your kindness toward ’Grandpa,’ deceived you, and tricked you into getting close to me, into being with me..."

Bai Su was stunned.

She had never expected Yelias to say something like that.

She could understand such sensitive and insecure thoughts, but she’d never imagined they would come from a man.

Bai Su suddenly burst out laughing. "Yelias, you’re so silly."

’Why are all my Beast Husbands such sensitive little princesses?’

Yelias looked up at her, baffled.

Bai Su leaned in and captured his lips in a reassuring kiss, gently pouring her affection into it little by little.

Once she was sure Yelias had been soothed, Bai Su gave him another peck on the lips before pulling away.

The tips of Yelias’s ears were bright red, and he tried to lean in for another kiss.

Leia was ecstatic and insisted on measuring her height every day after her treatment.

Xiao Yi was also overjoyed.

The only one who wasn’t happy, it seemed, was Luo’an.

Bai Su glanced at Luo’an, who was conducting an experiment under a dark cloud of gloom, and asked Leia, "Has he been like this lately?"

Leia hummed a little tune, gloating. "Yep. He’s about to be out of a job."

"Out of a job?" Bai Su looked at Xiao Yi. "You’re firing him?"

Xiao Yi said, "I wouldn’t exactly call it firing him, but it’s true that we no longer have a need for his services."

"I originally hired him to research Leia’s condition—all of it, from his research on females to organ transplantation, was for the sake of curing her. Now that all those problems have been readily solved, there’s naturally no need for his research to continue."

Bai Su nodded in understanding, then rubbed her nose, feeling a pang of guilt.

’So, I’m the one who put him out of a job.’

’Then again, his research harmed others for his own benefit. The world is better off without it.’

Then, as if thinking of something else, Bai Su walked over to strike up a conversation with Luo’an. "Um... I heard from Yelias that you and his sister..."

Luo’an stared at her, his eyes dark and full of wariness and defensiveness, with an added hint of aggression. "What are you trying to say?"

Bai Su raised an eyebrow. "I just wanted to let you know that Yelias told me a couple of days ago that he found a diary in his old family home. It’s something his sister wrote about her wedding preparations. I thought... perhaps you might want it."

A flicker of emotion crossed Luo’an’s dark eyes, and his fingers trembled slightly.

Having said her piece, Bai Su left it at that, said goodbye to Leia, and headed home.

But she never could have imagined that the very next day, she would receive news that Luo’an had jumped from a building, committing suicide.

By the time she and Yelias rushed to the scene, Luo’an was already dead.
