His instructions to the corporate lawyer flashed through his mind. 

‘Assault, lying in wait, the use of a deadly weapon… Do need to teach you how to do your job? Make sure you ask for the longest sentence possible. File your papers today.” 

What was the longest sentence for aggravated assault? 

Five years, ten years? 

If Luca hadn’t come to him today, would Kira be transferred to a penitentiary for felons? 

Austyn balled his hands into fists, his eyes smouldering like hot coals. 

“Where the hell’s Douglas?” 

The chief of police jogged downstairs as soon as he got the call. 

He had no time to wipe the sweat off his forehead as he greeted Austyn. ‘Mr McCarthy, it’s a pleas- 

“Where is she?’ Austyn cut him off. 

“Who? The chief was momentarily thrown. ‘Oh, you mean the two suspects who hurt Miss Woods?” 

Douglas was pleased with himself. 

He’d had some misgivings when Miss Glover called and asked him to withhold food, water and visitation for the two suspects. 

But then she dropped Mr McCarthy’s name and hinted that Miss Woods was rather important to him. 

Now, judging from the dark look on the president’s face, Douglas was glad he’d complied. 

‘Don’t worry, Mr McCarthy,‘ he said with a self–satisfied smile. They’re locked up tight. Not a drop of water nor a bite of food since last night. We did it for Miss- 

‘You starved her?” Austyn impaled the police chief with a glance. 

He was aware of the myriad tricks the police could use to ‘make a suspect behave.” 

His heart thumped as he thought of them using those tricks on Kira. 

Anger coursed through his veins. 

Douglas was open–mouthed. 

He started sweating again. 

Did he say something wrong? 

But wasn’t it Mr McCarthy who ordered him to withhold food and water? 

Wait. 

It was Miss Woods‘ agent who called him. 

She did mention Mr McCarthy’s name, but she never said she was calling at his behest… 

With a start, the chief realised he might have made a mistake. 

He quickly shook his head. “Oh no no no, of course not. We didn’t starve them. No one laid a finger on them.” 

‘Lead the way. The 

Where to? 

‘To the holding cell!” 

‘Oh right, please follow me. This way.” 

The chief carried his substantial bulk down the two flights of stairs 

When he reached the second last cell on the left, however, the door was wide open 

The cell was empty. 

‘Where is she?‘ Austyn’s icy voice sent a shiver down the chief’s spine. 

Douglas mopped his forehead. 1, ah, I might have gotten the wrong cell. 

‘Shit, she didn’t break out of jail, did she? Douglas thought as he frantically searched all the other holding cells. 

He didn’t find whom he was looking for. 

“Marvin!” Douglas shouted towards the stairs. ‘Get your ass down here!” 

“What’s up, Chief?‘ A young officer bounded down the stairs. 

He was on guard duty this morning. 

“Where’re the suspects?‘ Douglas pointed to the empty cell. 

“Oh, they were taken away by Captain O’Neill.” 

“Who?” The chief’s mind was blank. 

“Um, Captain Luca O’Neill, of the First Police Division, Criminal Investigation Department? 

Like the cavalry in a movie riding in to save the day at the last moment, Luca materialised at the mention 

of his name. 

“My ears are burning. Who’s talking about me?” 

“Luca!” Austyn could have strangled his friend if the man was standing just two steps closer. 

Knowing the bear was one poke away from going berserk, Luca explained post–haste, ‘I took them to the hospital. I was going to tell you back in the office, but you didn’t let me finish.” 

The man had rushed off like a bat out of hell the moment he heard Kira was in the city lock–up. 

Austyn pushed past Luca and headed for the stairs. 

‘Ow.” Luca rubbed his shoulder, which received a hard bump from the enraged man. 

‘What the hell are you waiting for?‘ Austyn snapped at him. 

‘Coming!” 

Kira couldn’t keep still. 

She wore a hole in the carpet as she paced back and forth in the hallway. 

Glana was inside the examination room, getting a CT scan. 

When the doctor finally came out, Kira moved so fast, she almost slammed into him.
