But now the pain had escalated. 

Austyn watched her manoeuvring awkwardly, trying to check on her ankle. 

There wasn’t enough space in front of the seat for her to lower her head. 

Her body was curled up. 

Like a cooked shrimp, Austyn thought. 

He opened the door on his side and stepped out of the car. 

Then he circled to the other side and pulled open the rear right door. ‘Come here.” 

“Why?” Kira twisted around in her seat to look at him. 

“Stop talking and come here!‘ 

Kira pursed her lips. 

What had gotten into the man? 

He was always blowing hot and cold, which baffled her. 

Knowing she wasn’t going to get an answer, Kira endured the pain and got out of the car. 

She hobbled over to him. 

‘SİL” 

She did. 

He closed the door. 

Five seconds later, he got into the backseat from the left side. 

He lifted her left leg, rested it over his knees and started undoing the shoelaces of her trainer. 

Kira shifted her body so she was sitting sideways, facing him. 

“What are you doing?” she asked. 

He held her ankle in his left palm, gently removed her sock, and ran his right hand over her foot. 

‘Where does it hurt? Here? Or here?” 

Kira squirmed uncomfortably. 

No one else had touched her feet before, except for her father who helped her put on her shoes before she turned two. 

Austyn had seen her naked, but somehow, this felt way more intimate. 

‘Cat got your tongue?‘ Austyn rapped a knuckle over her instep. ‘Where does it hurt?‘ 

‘Here.‘ Kira pointed with her finger. 

Austyn inspected her ankle under the dome light. 

It appeared to be swollen. 

He frowned; there was no ice on hand. 

“It’s going to hurt a little,‘ he said, putting his fingers on her ankle. 

‘It’s okay, I don’t need you to–Ow!” 

Austyn applied pressure on the ligament with a single finger. 

Then he started massaging back and forth across it. 

Kira winced. 

“Tell me if it hurts too bad,‘ he said, adding more pressure. 

Kira said nothing. 

She was still trying to process the fact that the man was helping her. 

Wasn’t he yelling at her just a minute ago? 

Then she started to fret. 

she had been on her feet all day, though she did take a shower a couple of hours ago. 

She hoped her feet didn’t smell, and she really, really hoped that Austyn did not notice the tiny hole in her white sock. 

His hand felt warm on her skin. 

Kira felt a tiny flutter in her heart. 

She looked away. 

His gentle touch, incongruous with his gruff manner, reminded Kira of her father. 

The night deepened. 

It was quiet inside the car. 

Kira could hear her breathing and his. 

An occasional car zoomed past, sweeping its light beams over the Hummer. 

Kira stole a glance at Austyn’s downcast face. 

He looked serious, his brows furrowed in concentration. 

From this angle, his eyelashes were impossibly long. 

Kira resisted an urge to run a finger over them. 

Providence could be so unfair, she thought.

If every woman had lashes like his, sellers of mascara, false lashes and eyelash extensions everywhere would be put out of business. 

And he was being so kind to her right now. 

The way he massaged her ankle, his featherlike touches, and his tender attentiveness were enough to make any woman 

swoon. 

But soon, the illusion of a gentle, caring Austyn was shattered. 

The man started running his hand up her call, caressing and stroking her skin. 

Then he went higher. 

His fingers danced along the inside of her thigh. 

Kira shrank back. 

She wanted to pull her leg back, but Austyn refused to let go.
