Kayleigh bit her bottom lip. 

He pinched her lip with two fingers. “Don’t make me repeat myself for the second time.” 

Kayleigh gulped. ‘I heard most of it, but I won’t tell anyone, I swear!! 

She raised her right hand as if ready to swear an oath. I won’t say a word. Please don’t be mad.” 

Liam stared into her eyes. ‘Only the dead tell no tales.” 

Her pupils dilated. 

Kayleigh was finding it difficult to breathe. 

“Scared? Liam chuckled and patted her cheeks. I was just kidding‘ 

It took the petrified actress a long while to find her voice again. ‘Liam…” 

He straightened up, went to the bar and poured himself a glass of wine. 

The Schloss Reinhartshausen Riesling’s fruity aroma filled the room. 

“No wonder McCarthy married Kira instead of you,” he said after taking a sip, ‘You scare too easily. A woman who jumps at her own shadow doesn’t have what it takes to run the McCarthy household.” 

The news knocked the wind out of Kayleigh.

She struggled to sit up on the sofa, 

Liam flashed the actress a charming smile. I’m not surprised you didn’t know. I myself only just found out that McCarthy married Kira a year ago,‘ 

Kayleigh heard every word, but it just didn’t register. 

Austyn married that bitch a year ago? 

So the Hewitt woman wasn’t just his bit on the side? 

Kayleigh didn’t want to believe it, but then she remembered that Austyn had stopped coming to her apartment about a year ago. 

She had to call multiple times and practically beg him to come with invented excuses. 

Most of the time, he just sent his assistant. 

That night, when an overzealous fan broke into her apartment, Kayleigh could have stopped it. 

She’d seen the man follow her home. 

If she wanted, she could have called security and had them deal with him. 

But she decided not to. 

Sure enough, Austyn showed up at her place at the drop of a hat once he heard she was in danger. 

But he didn’t stay the night. 

Could Liam be right? 

Had Austyn grown tired of her because she was too…faint–hearted?

Liam cocked an eyebrow. “You can’t hold on to your man, and you’re blaming someone else for doing a better job than you?! 

Kayleigh dug her nails into her palms, trying to calm down. 

It didn’t matter. 

Hewitt had taken her cheque and promised she would leave Austyn. 

Kayleigh knew the woman might be lying, but she was prepared for that. 

She told Austyn about the cheque and played for him the recording, which was filled with Hewitt’s disparaging 

remarks about him. 

Even if the two of them were married, the cheque and the recording were still going to drive a wedge between husband and wife. 

Confrontations, fights, and then–divorce, hopefully. 

Kayleigh still stood a chance of winning Austyn over. 

That last thought gave her a shot in the arm. 

When her heartbeat and breathing finally returned to normal, Kayleigh asked, not without some trepidation, “So, um, are you and Austyn really brothers?” 

“Didn’t you hear it with your own ears?” 

“I did, 1 just…I didn’t know you were a McCarthy. I’m a little surprised, that’s all.” 

Kayleigh met Liam two years ago, 

She was on an overseas trip and wandered into a bar.
