That Bitch Again
She didn’t know why she was angry, but she was.
Maybe it was because the inconsiderate man was making Elsie wait up for him all night.
The housekeeper was old enough to be his mother.
Didn’t Austyn know that Elsie wouldn’t go to bed till he returned?
Couldn’t he spare a thought for the poor housekeeper?
How self–centred could he be?
Kira flung the book aside.
She pulled up Austyn’s number on her phone, ready to give him a piece of her mind, but somehow, she dialled Kai’s number instead.
‘Young Madam?” Kai sounded surprised.
It was almost ten pm.
“Hello, Kai. Uh, sorry to disturb you at this hour. Are you sleeping?”
‘I’m about to.”
‘Oh.‘
“What’s wrong?”
“Well, nothing, really…”
Kai re–activated his sleepy brain cells.
Kira would not call him in the middle of the night for no reason.
And he had an inkling of what that reason might be.
So he waited.
The silence on the line lasted for almost thirty seconds.
In the end, Kira gritted her teeth and said, ‘Is, uh, your boss with you right now?!
As expected.
Kai was ready with the answer. ‘No. Boss left the office at six. I haven’t seen him since then.”
After a pause, he added, “He’s not home yet?‘
‘No, he’s not. Elsie is still waiting up for him. That’s why I wanted to call and see if you…Anyway, thanks. Sorry for disturbing you. Good night.‘
‘Good
The call ended before Kai could finish saying ‘night.”
Shaking his head, Kai was about to put down his phone when an idea suddenly came to him.
Young Madam obviously wanted Austyn home, though she used the housekeeper as an excuse.
She was probably too shy to call Austyn directly, hence the call to Kal.
The assistant decided to be helpful.
He dialled his boss‘ number.
Thai Birch Again
Sunglade Condominiums.
Kayleigh looked at Austyn and hesitated before approaching the sofa.
She sat down next to him. ‘Your phone’s ringing.”
s phone was on the
coffee table, its screen lit up.
Austyn had his eyes closed and didn’t seem to notice.
He’d shown up at her apartment half an hour ago, tipsy.
Kayleigh showed him in.
He plonked himself down on the sofa and had not said a word since.
‘Austyn?
Slowly, he opened his eyes, but made no move to pick up the phone. “Who is it?‘
Kayleigh glanced at the screen. ‘Kal.‘
“Ignore it.‘
Kayleigh raised her eyebrows slightly.
She sensed he was in a bad mood, but couldn’t pluck up the courage to ask him why.
The phone kept vibrating and only stopped when the call was disconnected.
Austyn leaned his head back and rubbed his temples.
He had not gone back to the villa for two days.
He had not seen
Kira for two days.
He thought keeping his distance from her would allow him to reclaim peace of mind.
He would be able to focus on work and think with a clear head.
On the contrary, he was distracted and easily irritated, his thoughts in a muddle.
He’d gone without a tie, but still felt like he was suffocating.
Brrring, brrring-
His phone started ringing again.
Austyn scowled.
“It’s Kai again,‘ Kayleigh said. ‘Maybe he has something important.‘
‘Answer it.”
Kayleigh picked up the phone. ‘Hello.‘
After listening for a while, she held out the phone to Austyn. ‘Kai says he has something to tell you. Maybe it’s about
work.”
*You better have something important to say.‘ Austyn snatched the phone.
His stern voice gave Kal a pause. ‘Uh…Young Madam called me and wanted to know where you were. Does this count as Important?!
‘She called you to ask about me?‘ Austyn sat up straight.
“Yes.”
‘What else did she say?‘
Kai tried to recall the conversation. ‘She said Elsie was worried because you were not home.‘
‘And?‘
“And nothing. That’s it. Then she hung up.”
Beep beep.
Kai held up his phone in front of his face.
Boss had ended the call without saying goodbye.
Kai stared at the screen, bewildered.
So, had he done the right thing or not?
Austyn pocketed his phone with a blank face.
Silence returned to the apartment.
Kayleigh, seated next to him, heard both sides of the conversation.
She lowered her eyes, hiding the glint of malice within.
Kira Hewitt.
That bitch again.
She must have Austyn’s number, yet she called the assistant and asked him to deliver a message, so Austyn would have to be the one to call her back, which gave her the upper hand.
Kayleigh had underestimated the college girl.
The actress took a deep breath, gripping her bathrobe tightly.
‘Do you want me to stay?”
Her head snapped up when she heard Austyn speak, but she thought she must have misheard the man. “What?”
“You want me to stay the night, don’t you?”
His face was inscrutable, but the meaning of his words was clear.
Kayleigh’s hands trembled. ‘Are you…are you staying here tonight?‘
‘Don’t y
