"If the person who saved you back then wasn't her," Sienna said, looking directly into his eyes, "would you regret everything you've done today?"
The second those words dropped, Jarred snapped his eyes up. A layer of bone-chilling detachment instantly coated his dark gaze.
Without a moment of hesitation, his voice came out low and frigid. "I never answer hypotheticals."
Vague and evasive.
Sienna had guessed it would be like this, and she didn't need his answer anyway.
Her gaze grew even sharper. "Fine. Then keep protecting her. Keep cleaning up her messes. Mrs. Bridges' death, the old man's severe injuries, every single old debt. I will investigate them all to the bitter end and dig up every piece of evidence. I want to see exactly how long you can shield her. Rest assured, I will make sure Celeste rots in a cell."
The expression on Jarred's face remained utterly calm. The corners of his lips curved upward slightly, forming a faint, unpredictable smile. Yet the coldness surging in his eyes was enough to send shivers down anyone's spine.
"No need to go through all that trouble," he said slowly, his tone flat but carrying an overwhelming sense of control. "I can help you achieve that wish."
Sienna's brows immediately knit together. Filled with confusion, she stared at him intently. "What do you mean?"
The candlelight illuminated his impeccably handsome profile, his smile gentle.
But the icy intent roiling in his eyes carried an unquestionable, obsessive dominance.
He leaned in slightly, closing the distance between them.
His sharp dark eyes locked onto hers like unsheathed daggers. "From now on, I will no longer interfere with Celeste's affairs. I am washing my hands of her."
Those deep, dangerously predatory eyes looked exactly as they had seven years ago when she first arrived at the Sterling manor.
It was that inescapable, suffocating pressure of being marked by a hunter.
He paused for a second, his lips parting. "And we stop talking about divorce."
Sienna thought she heard him wrong.
She looked at him, looking at the obsessive seriousness emerging on that refined, gentlemanly face.
Suddenly, everything felt absurd to the extreme.
