Begging for a Second Chance (Sienna Sloan and Jarred Sterling) novel Chapter 424

The next day.

Sienna had just stepped out of surgery when she received a call from one of her operatives.

"Ms. Sloan, bad news! Word from the detention ward just came in. Celeste Carlyle was confirmed dead at 1:00 AM this morning after rescue efforts failed due to a severe infection!"

"What?" Sienna could hardly believe her ears.

"How does a perfectly fine person suddenly die? Was the infection really that severe?"

Sienna couldn't help but be suspicious; she had personally treated Celeste's legs, and she knew exactly what the consequences would be.

Yes, they would get infected, but at most, it would make her suffer—it would never reach a fatal level.

Sienna pressed on, "Haven't doctors been treating her these past few days? Did you review her medical logs?"

Her subordinate answered frantically, "We checked the logs every time, and the doctors' notes never indicated anything that serious.

But somehow, during the final check-up last night, the doctor suddenly claimed her condition had critically worsened.

The ward sent in an emergency medical team, and she flatlined in under half an hour."

Sienna frowned. "If this happened at 1 AM, why are you only reporting it now?"

"I'm sorry, Ms. Sloan."

The subordinate's voice dropped, laced with obvious guilt. "The ward locked down all information last night.

After the doctors left, we demanded to see the prisoner, but they refused, saying it was too late.

Then out of nowhere, news broke this morning that she was dead, and we only just found out it happened in the early hours.

We heard that the matriarch and Helena claimed the body overnight and drove straight to the crematorium."

That fast?

Sienna's brow furrowed deeper. "How could you guys not catch wind of such a massive operation?"

The subordinate was clearly panicking. "I... Ms. Sloan, we dropped the ball. We're ready to accept any punishment."

"Did you follow up at Capital Memorial? Did you confirm it was actually Celeste?" Sienna rubbed her temples.

The operative swallowed hard. "By the time we got the tip and rushed over, the cremation was already finished.
