Madeline looked away, refusing to greet Liliana. Instead, she turned and walked into the nearby pantry for a glass of water.
A sudden chill ran down her spine. She glanced back to see Liliana standing in the doorway, glaring at her.
The look in her eyes was dark and fiercely jealous.
She was jealous that Madeline held the title of Mrs. Whitman and was greeting guests as the future matriarch of the family.
Madeline simply ignored her.
Lucius walked in right then, looking for Madeline, only to freeze when he spotted Liliana.
His expression shifted. Before Arthur officially named him the heir, the patriarch had conducted a thorough background check and knew all about his history with Liliana.
Because of that, Lucius hadn't wanted her here. But before he could say a word, Liliana called out in a frail, delicate voice, "Lucius."
Completely ignoring Madeline, Liliana cast a disdainful glance her way before gently wrapping her arm around Lucius's.
She acted as if she were the true Mrs. Whitman, and Madeline was nothing more than a hired maid.
Knowing this was highly inappropriate for such a major event, Lucius discreetly pulled his arm away. "What are you doing here?"
"It's Arthur's birthday," she said. "How could I miss it?"
She continued to act as if Madeline didn't exist, gazing up at Lucius with absolute adoration.
"I actually came with Sheri," Liliana added. "I'm so glad you asked her to accompany me to the UK. You didn't even need to tell her to look after me. We clicked instantly and had a wonderful time together."
Hearing this, Madeline immediately knew exactly who she was talking about.
Sheri Yates was Lucius's cousin on his mother's side. Out of all his relatives, she was the only one he was genuinely close to.
