Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord novel Chapter 144

Chapter 144: Continued conflict (2)

A day later, Nathaniel got dressed for another meeting with the Blackthorns which would take place before the ball. He then searched for Josephine who needed to join him.

"What are you doing? You must get ready to be with my family before the ball," Nathaniel said, puzzled by Josephine’s attire. "We will be late."

"I am not going to be late since I will not meet with your family. You, on the other hand, will be late if you stand around questioning me. I will meet you at the ball," Josephine replied.

Nathaniel wasn’t in the mood for this. "Josephine, it is expected that I will show up with my wife on my arm."

"Well, sometimes we fail to meet others’ expectations. You have been meeting with your family behind my back to speak about Xavier so surely, you can go one more night without me at your side. I’m sure you will do well," Josephine replied, taking her time getting dressed.

"Woman-"

"You watch your tongue with how you address me. You are not the only one who can lose their temper. Why should I go to see your family during a time when they are not thrilled about who Xavier married? Do you want me to further realise how I wasn’t the wife they wanted for you? Is that it?" Josephine asked, yet to forget what Xavier brought to light.

Nathaniel sighed. This argument was too repetitive. "It is not the same for you as it is for Selene. I love you-"

"Who is to say he doesn’t love her? You have not been around them without arguing to see what I have seen. Xavier loves her so it is the same," said Josephine.

None of Nathaniel’s reasoning made sense to her.

Nathaniel approached Josephine to grab her shoulders. "It is not the same because you come from a good family who did not try to kill us. That is the difference. Nothing about that woman is useful to us. It was already set up that he would marry someone from other families to make our lineage stronger."

Josephine couldn’t help laughing at Nathaniel. "How strange it is that none of you realise you don’t need to marry another royal to make your bloodline stronger. Look at how Xavier turned out when he came from me. All you need is a pureblood and Xavier found himself one."

"They are yet to have a child for you to know if it will be weak or strong. There are only five families. Will you continue to marry each other for the rest of your lives? If you do, I want no part in any of this then," Josephine said as then they would only be ruining themselves.

"We want to connect all the families now and then will marry other purebloods later on. This is the perfect time to strengthen our bloodline. The king has a child with Vivienne and will have another. Now he has turned to taking other purebloods as his mistresses. We are behind," Nathaniel said, annoyed they had to play catch up. frёewebηovel.cѳm

"Oh, I see," Josephine finally understood the rush. "Darius will always be ahead because he isn’t shy from sleeping with every woman before him. Xavier will never be interested in playing catch-up by having mistresses. Do not force our son to do what you could not. If it was so important, you shouldn’t have married me."

Nathaniel unintentionally gripped Josephine’s shoulder. "I married you because I loved you."

"We were not terrible parents to him. He makes those claims too loosely and you allow it," Nathaniel argued.

"I do not think we were awful parents. We gave Xavier everything he needed but you must admit that like our parents, we didn’t give him enough love. Time moves slowly for us so we were stuck enjoying ourselves, thinking we had time before he would be a man. We missed events we were to be there for," Josephine admitted.

It took some time for Josephine to realise she wasn’t any different from her parents.

"Maybe it is true what the humans say that our heart prevents us from properly loving someone. We are always so focused on power and desires. Even now all you think of is power to the point you would force your son to leave the woman he adores. We have spent our lives focused on the wrong things," Josephine said, angry she realised it too late.

"I have been a good wife to you but now, I want to be a better mother. I am keeping my word to give Selene a chance and so far, she has not disappointed me. I cannot say the same for you. Are you not late, Nathaniel?" Josephine asked, taking a seat on the bed. "Or will you stay?"

Nathaniel didn’t have much time to waste on this since he was late. He couldn’t have his siblings speaking to the others without him around. "In the future, you will thank me when our bloodline is stronger than ever. I will not have the king outshine my son."

"If you keep this up, you will lose more than Xavier. You will lose me. If you ever let me walk out that door then I am forced to believe you do not love me as much as you claim. Be safe out there," Josephine said, moving to lie down so she did not have to look at him anymore.

Again, Nathaniel let her down when he left the room instead of staying with her.
