’There’s a misunderstanding here, Xavier. None of us did such a thing. Tell him, Selene," Trevor said, looking to his cousin for help.
"It is Lord Blackthorn," Xavier corrected Trevor. "Do not turn to her for help after you have turned your back on her. You’ve come in and taken what belongs to her."
"That isn’t true. As with any other family, when there isn’t a male heir it will pass onto a male relative. That was my father who then passed it onto me as a gift. I’m telling the truth," Trevor swore.
Xavier loosened his hold on Trevor. "It is always amusing to see our kind get so wrapped up in human ways. That is a law amongst humans that a man must inherit the property but it is not the same for our kind. It would rightfully pass on to the child unless it was sent to the court the child wasn’t to have anything."
"Do you have papers to show that her father didn’t want her to inherit this home and everything in it?" Xavier asked, willing to bet it wouldn’t be found.
Trevor fixed his shirt. Behind him, he heard the footsteps of his mother who came for a visit. It was awful timing or was it good since it was her plan?
"Selene? What do you think you are- Lord Blackthorn," Ruby Harrison gasped. Her eyes were set on Selene at first, but then Trevor moved to show Xavier’s face. "Trevor, you did not tell me Lord Blackthorn was here. With Selene," Ruby frowned.
It was an unlikely pair.
"She is his wife," Trevor whispered to his mother.
Xavier lacked patience. What was the point of whispering among vampires?
"Is it true?" Ruby replied, looking at Selene. What had this girl done to get her hands on a lord? Wasn’t Xavier aware that Selene was no longer the daughter of a count? It was unfortunate the title had been stripped away instead of given to her son.
Ruby had to look twice when she noticed a mark on Selene’s skin. Had Selene come to flaunt her love?
Ruby forced a smile. "That is good news Selene dear. You went and found yourself a good man. It’s a shame what happened with the other one. I was thinking of reaching out to ask how you are feeling about the human but I thought you would be too embarrassed to face me."
"How strange. You wouldn’t miss a chance to laugh at my failing marriage. Are you ill Aunt Ruby?" Selene asked.
If not for Xavier being present, Ruby would have dragged Selene inside and given her a slap for all the trouble she was causing the family. Wasn’t it bad already that the family had traitors amongst it?
"I am not ill. I am as good as ever these days. Trevor, why are you having them stand by the door? Invite them in," Ruby said, making way for Xavier.
Ruby didn’t need anyone passing by to see them at odds with Xavier. Seeing Xavier here at their front door, others might think Trevor and the lord were close.
Selene wanted to laugh at how quickly her aunt tried to please Xavier. They were always like this, using her family to get close to other nobles or wealthy people around the town.
Ruby had been one to always be around Selene’s mother, praising every little thing she did. Her mother had been kind to offer Ruby what she needed. They bonded since they had both married into the Harrison family. freewebnσvel.cѳm
That changed not long after Selene’s mother passed with Ruby speaking poorly of the deceased woman. She claimed to have always sensed there was something wrong with the couple so she distanced herself from them over the years but Selene knew that was not the truth.
Xavier’s presence startled her but Ruby had composed herself and now she was ready for whatever the couple came to speak of. They were lucky that Trevor’s wife was out visiting a friend so she would not witness the fight for this home.
"Selene, this isn’t how you were raised. Your mother would be very disappointed if she saw you acting like this. Hasn’t she already suffered enough?" Ruby asked, the corners of her lips lifting into a devious smile.
Aside from Trevor inheriting all that he did, Ruby enjoyed the downfall of her brother-in-law and his wife. She had always been in second place but was luckily presented with the chance to get what she always felt should be in her hands.
"You should be careful, Mrs. Harrison. One little slip-up and you might find yourself floating amongst the dead," Xavier interjected to silence all talk about Selene’s mother.
"Lord Blackthorn," Trevor came to stand beside his mother. "You should be careful before your words are mistaken for a threat."
"It was a threat. Should I be more detailed about how she might find herself in the land of the dead? I am more than happy to give a few ideas of what could happen. Should I start?" Xavier asked, his list prepared in his head.
Trevor laughed since it was crazy for Xavier to want to kill his mother. Xavier didn’t know anything about this family for him to judge them. "Let me find the butler first to prepare us something to drink and then we can get started on what you came for."
"No, thank you," Xavier stopped Trevor. "I am quite cautious about what I consume so I must decline your drinks."
"I see. Mother, they are here because Selene thinks there is something she owns here," Trevor got straight to the point."
’What gave her that silly thought?’ Ruby replied, feigning confusion with her lifted brows. What could belong to Selene?
