Theresa quickly bowed her head to look at the floor as she made her way out of the room.
Darius eyed the young woman Vivienne kept at her side.
"The least you could do is hide your interest in my maid," Vivienne said, noticing his obvious stare. "Theresa is a loyal servant to me and intends to wed one day. You cannot place her on your long list of whores."
"It is your fault for keeping such a beautiful woman at your side. I am starting to think you do it on purpose to rile me up. You get angry with me but you missed the way her eyes lingered on me for a moment. Many want their chance to be with the king. You mustn’t be so foolish to think you can trust your maid," said Darius.
"Unless Theresa grew a third eye, her head was bowed as she walked out. Do not go around making up stories and don’t dare go near her. I will kill you if you do," Vivienne threatened Darius.
The number of women Vivienne could trust decreased with each passing day. She knew many wanted a chance with the king but others were unfortunate to catch his eye. Vivienne couldn’t tell who was interested in Darius so she kept her distance.
"Then, will you leave me if she comes to me willingly? You speak as if I have taken anyone by force. I have always given them a choice. I cannot help them choose to become my lover. You have the palace walls nicely decorated," Darius said, admiring the sight of the beheaded maid Vivienne caught him with.
"You caused that," Vivienne replied, knowing what he spoke of.
"No, I believe it was your order that took her head. You should be careful the kingdom won’t think of you as a queen who abuses her power. I won’t be able to help you if it comes to that. It might be your head displayed next if you are not careful," Darius said, worried about her safety.
"Do not act like you care. You will lose your head before I lose mine. My father will not sit by while you kill his daughter, the queen. You must remember that it isn’t all your decisions. The five families are the rulers in secret," Vivienne reminded Darius.
"Calm down, Vivienne. You tend to take our conversations too far. I came here to ask about Xavier’s wife. Have you succeeded in getting her to agree to enter the palace again or have you failed me?"Darius asked.
"She sent that vase there to make up for not accepting my invitation. That is the kind of woman you wanted me to bring here. Do not laugh!" Vivienne raised her voice, annoyed that Darius thought it was funny. "I am the queen. If I call upon anyone they should be running."
Darius continued to laugh. "It is funny that you did not want her here but you’re upset that she isn’t coming. Maybe you’re not that important to her."
Seeing Vivienne was getting too serious about the matter, Darius’s laughter died down. "Try something else to get her here, Vivienne. You’re the queen so command her to come. It must be killing you inside that it’s Xavier’s wife of all people who is treating you this way. I wouldn’t mind if you correct her."
"It will only be pureblood women from families with unique talents my family thinks will benefit our lineage. They will enter the palace officially to be at my side but do not worry, you will rank over them. As the queen, I will always love you the most. My time will go to you-"
"Your time is already spread amongst the whores you invite to your quarters. To bring more women means that time will be decreased. Do not try to make me believe this is your family’s doing. You don’t know how to control yourself. You want all the women in the kingdom," Vivienne argued.
She refused to believe this wasn’t Darius’s idea.
"Not all. Just the ones who capture my eye. For you, I have limited these women to three families. I have not decided yet but I thought to inform you. Unlike the other women you have killed, you cannot harm the ones who will enter the palace as my mistresses," Darius warned Vivienne to avoid future trouble.
Darius grew tired of Vivienne’s antics and the way she killed some of the women whose company he enjoyed. It was time to do it the right way and the only way to convince the elders was to make it only purebloods who would become his official mistresses.
Darius stood up to comfort Vivienne. "I am not the first who has done this. All my children must be strong and inherit many talents. You should find some relief in knowing it is your children who are legitimate and will inherit the throne."
Vivienne slapped the hand Darius reached out to her. "Get away from me."
