Betrayed? I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 135

Chapter 135

A subtle, clean scent of soap mingled with something distinctly his own, enveloping me in an unexpected intimacy. Despite the calmness of the moment, an odd flutter of nerves stirred within me.

I turned my head slightly, trying to break away. “Have you come up with an idea yet? If not…” My voice lacked its usual icy detachment; instead, it carried a trace of embarrassed impatience, and my cheeks burned with an unnatural pink flush.

Gavin’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. “I have thought about it.”

“Then speak,” I urged.

He paused, hesitation flickering in his eyes. When he finally spoke, his voice was roughened, as if scraped raw by sandpaper. “Maybe you could repay me with your…”

“Baby, I’m hoooome…!” The sudden interruption cut through the tension like a knife.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft ding, and Chloe stepped inside, balancing a work bag in one hand and a cardboard pizza box in the other.

Her greeting faltered, strangled mid-word, as if something had caught in her throat.

Startled, I straightened abruptly and glanced at Gavin. “What did you just say?”

“Nothing.” His tone was flat and unreadable. He shot a sharp glance at Chloe, stepped back slightly, and called for the dog to come inside.

Chloe covered her mouth, her eyes wide as she silently pleaded with me: What on earth is happening here?

“Nothing’s going on,” I said quickly, grabbing her arm and pulling her into my apartment.

Later, Chloe replayed the look Gavin had given her in her mind, shaking her head in disbelief. “No way. There’s definitely something. The way he looked at me just now… it was like murder in his eyes.” She pressed, “What exactly did he say to you?”

“He didn’t get to finish—then you came back.” I took the takeout bag from her hands and began unpacking the containers on the dining table.

His voice had been so low that I hadn’t caught the words clearly, but whatever he was about to say, it didn’t sound promising.

The next day was the weekend. No clinic hours, and the lab was deserted.

Gavin was about to hang up when he caught the faint, steady rhythm of her breathing. She had fallen asleep.

His long, slender finger hesitated over the ‘end call’ button before retreating. His lashes lowered slightly, casting a shadow over the complex, unreadable emotions swirling in his deep blue eyes.

He moved quietly across the room, retrieved a wireless headset, and slipped it on before returning to his study to continue working.

Some time later, the doorbell rang.

Almost automatically, Gavin muted the call interface. Rising, he approached the door with a faint frown. “What are you doing here?”

Without waiting for an invitation, Aiden stepped inside. “Your line was busy forever. I had to come over.”

“What do you want?” Gavin slumped onto the sofa with a lazy air, crossing his long legs, his entire demeanor radiating irritation at the intrusion.

Aiden studied him carefully, not diving straight into the reason for his visit. “What’s with the attitude? Got a secret lover stashed in here or something?”
