Betrayed? I Upgraded to His Billionaire Brother novel Chapter 155

Gavin glanced down at the silver watch strapped to his wrist, his expression calm but focused. “The paperwork is still being processed. Finish your breakfast first, then go pick her up. It should be about the right time now.”

My heart skipped a beat. “She can come home today?” The shock and joy that swept over me instantly chased away the heaviness I had felt all night. I stared at Gavin, my eyes wide with disbelief.

I had always trusted that Gavin could handle things, but I hadn’t expected him to get Chloe released so quickly. It was a relief I hadn’t dared hope for.

Gavin pulled out a chair and settled in, placing a warm bowl of oatmeal in front of me. He tapped the table lightly with his finger, a silent reminder. “Eat your breakfast first.”

“Okay,” I said, nodding obediently. I sat down beside him, picked up my spoon, and began eating the oatmeal drenched in milk.

The omelet he made smelled delicious too, and I found myself savoring the simple meal.

In the eight years we’d been apart, so much had changed between us. Gavin—who once barely knew his way around a kitchen—had somehow become a decent cook.

After finishing breakfast, I headed straight to the police station to pick Chloe up. Gavin had arranged everything in advance, so when I arrived, the lead counsel from Windsor Corp. had just wrapped up the final procedures.

The police released her quickly, and soon Chloe was brought out.

She looked nothing like her usual self. Since starting her career, Chloe had always been the epitome of a polished legal professional—immaculate makeup, perfectly styled hair, and a sharp, confident demeanor.

But now, she appeared disheveled and worn out. Her carefully applied makeup was smeared and uneven, and her normally smooth, glossy chestnut waves were tangled and messy.

My eyes filled with tears immediately. I rushed forward and wrapped her in a tight embrace. “Chloe, I’m so sorry. I’m really sorry…”

She brushed me off gently, pulling back to take my hand. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m fine.” Her voice was steady, but I could tell she was exhausted. “Let’s just go home. I really need a shower.”

The more she downplayed what had happened, the heavier the guilt weighed on me.

During the drive back, Chloe seemed to sense my mood. “If you’re feeling that bad, maybe you could just transfer me a million or two?” she teased with a sly smile.

I glanced over at her, then at the red light ahead. “Alright,” I said, pulling out my phone, ready to make the transfer.

Suddenly, Chloe laughed and snatched the phone from my hand. “Sweetheart, do you remember the first time we met?”

Chloe shifted in her seat. “That lawyer earlier was from the Windsor Group,” she said, clearly knowledgeable about the legal world. “You went to Gavin for help?”

Her question caught me off guard. My grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly. I nodded stiffly. “Yeah.”

“Why do you look so nervous?” Chloe’s eyes narrowed suspiciously. “You didn’t… do anything stupid to get me out, did you?”

“No!” I replied immediately, the denial firm and quick.

I wasn’t sure how long Gavin’s current interest in me would last. Maybe in a few days, he’d tell me to get lost. I didn’t want to burden Chloe with that uncertainty now.

Changing the subject, I asked, “Will this whole thing affect your job?”

Chloe shook her head, her voice tinged with relief. “No. You know, for all his tough exterior, Gavin is surprisingly thorough. He already had his lawyer call my boss and explain that this was just his cousin messing around and had nothing to do with me.”

I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding, feeling a flicker of hope amid the chaos.
