“Yes, sir.” The assistant acknowledged the order and started pulling Amelia toward the basement.
Suddenly, a luxury car sped toward the entrance. Victoria got out quickly and walked over to Zane.
“Have you lost your mind? She’s your sister–in–law! How much more do you intend to put her through?”
“Mother,” Zane’s voice was cool, “don’t you think you’re overstepping?”
Victoria knew his temperament; she couldn’t confront him head–on.
“Think of Max. Your brother hasn’t been gone long. How can you bear for Max to lose his father and then hardly ever see his mother?”
Seeing a flicker of hesitation in Zane’s eyes, Victoria pressed her advantage.
“No matter what Amelia has done wrong, she is still your nephew’s birth mother. Do this for your brother’s sake, please?”
Zane and Ethan had always been close.
There was none of the typical power and inheritance struggles between the two brothers. Zane had always deeply respected his older brother, Ethan, the acknowledged family heir.
When Amelia had abruptly turned and married Ethan, Zane hadn’t made a sound, simply watching over her from a distance.
He’d had a truly good older brother.
After a moment of hesitation, Zane’s brow furrowed slightly. “I can let her go this once. But you’d better keep her on a tight leash. Don’t let her cause any more trouble.”
Amelia couldn’t hold back a huge sigh of relief. The moment the bodyguard released her, she collapsed to the ground.
Even after Zane and his entourage had driven away, a deep, lingering fear still gripped her heart.
Fortunately, her gamble had paid off.
Victoria made no move to help her up, merely watching from a distance. “Well? You said you had something about Zane to tell me. What is it?”
An hour ago, she had received a message from Amelia.
Originally, she hadn’t taken it seriously, hadn’t even planned on coming.
Her dissatisfaction with Amelia had been building for a long time.
She’d seduced both of her sons–one lost his life, the other his reputation.
On top of that, with a mother like Amelia, Max was bound to be ruined. Given that, she might as well let Zane deal with her as he saw fit.
She’d have been happy if Amelia just vanished into thin air.
But Amelia had told her she had information about Zane, something very important.
That’s why she had come.
Chapter 180
Amelia hadn’t actually been sure Victoria would come. She’d spent more time with this mother in law than Elara had.
Victoria, who seemed kind and reasonable, was all a facade.
Given their relationship. Victoria probably wanted to skin her alive. Why would she be willing to come to her rescue?
Catching her breath, Amelia pushed herself up from the ground using the wall for support, her eyes turning venomous. “Do you know why Zane was so good to me before?”
This question was practically Victoria’s biggest trigger!
Not only had she seduced her brother–in–law, but she dared to ask about it to her face.
Victoria’s brow furrowed in deep anger. “Isn’t it because you have no shame!”
When a woman shamelessly throws herself at a man, what man can resist?
Although, Victoria had never known before that her younger son was so lacking in principles.
She had always believed Zane, since childhood, was a self–disciplined, well–mannered gentleman of impeccable upbringing.
The only possible explanation was that Amelia was simply too brazen.
Amelia wasn’t angered by the insult. Instead, she smiled faintly.
“Do you remember the car accident that took your husband’s life and put you in the hospital?*
That incident was, of course, deeply etched in Victoria’s memory.
In that crash, she had lost the most important man in her life.
After that, she had never considered remarrying.
Mentioning it now, a flicker of pain passed through Victoria’s eyes. “Why are you bringing that up?”
Amelia pressed, “You remember it, though, right?”
“Of course I remember.”
“Then do you remember the police officer and the little girl who saved you and Zane?” Amelia asked next.
“I remember them.”
In Victoria’s memory, that little girl had been sunny and outgoing, like a well–tended sunflower–exceptionally likable.
If things hadn’t been so rushed back then, Victoria would have even considered arranging a future match between Zane and that child.
A police family might not have had much wealth, but their background was clean and respectable.
Combined with the girl’s sweet, lovely personality, she and Zane would have made a perfect golden couple.
Frowning, Victoria looked at Amelia. “What are you trying to pull? What does this have to do with Zane?”
*Zane has been searching for the little girl who saved you back then. He thought… that girl was me.” Amelia’s voice carried a trace of bleakness. “That’s why he was always so good to me.”
Chapter 180
Victoria instantly laughed, a link of utter contempt on her face. “I knew It! I knew Zane couldn’t have been so infatuated with you on his own. It was all something you stoler
To impersonate someone else’s identity–her methods were truly despicable.
“I didn’t steal it!” Amelia retorted sharply. “If I had been the one to come across that accident back then, I would have saved you too! 1. I just didn’t have Elara’s damn luck!”
To have a police officer for a father, and to just happen upon a wealthy family’s car accident–it was the kind of treatment reserved for a novel’s
heroine.
If it had been her, seeing that luxury car, she would have rushed over without a second thought, waiting for the rich family to heap rewards upon her.
Elara was just luckier than her, that’s all.
Victoria’s face stiffened. It took her a moment to process the words. “Elara? Are you saying… the person who saved us back then was Elara?”
