I nodded. “Yes.”

I’d started thinking about a contingency plan the moment I sensed resentment from other team members.

I’d racked my brains and finally, during the long New Year holiday, I’d asked Neil to discreetly arrange for that camera to be installed. It was, indeed, on a separate line, and only the head of Security, knew about it. Everyone had been busy with the holidays, so I never got around to mentioning it to Elias.

Elias looked at me, the admiration clear in his eyes. “If the Professor knew you’d become this shrewd and thorough, he’d be bragging about you for weeks.”

I smiled faintly.

I knew my mentor saw me as the daughter he never had.

When I first became his apprentice, I didn’t know a thing. But for every new herb I memorized, the old man would celebrate by having an extra drink with dinner.

Whether it was a real celebration or just an excuse, he never missed a chance to raise his glass.

Now that I was starting to achieve something, he’d talk me up whenever my name came up, beaming with pride.

Even though most people had no idea who this ‘apprentice‘ of his was, they’d happily play along and feed his ego.

Sometimes, in the quiet of the night, when I thought about the fourteen years I’d spent with him and his wife, the resentment I held against Gavin for abandoning me would lessen, just a little.

After all, he was the one who found me my teacher, personally took me to be accepted as his student, and faithfully drove me to and from my lessons for six years, rain or shine.

Elias, who lived nearby, offered me a ride home. I dozed off and on during the trip. As the car slid into the underground garage, Elias eased to a stop and asked, “Chloe will be back soon, right?”

“Yeah,” I smiled. “The day after tomorrow.”

He did a quick mental calculation.”

Just in time for your birthday. Any cravings? My treat, and we’ll invite her too.”

I’d actually forgotten about it until he mentioned it. He and Chloe had been the ones celebrating with me these past few years. “Sure,” I agreed readily, joking, “Prepare to have your wallet massacred.”

“Someone has to look out for you youngsters,” he said, playing along with the old routine.

“Don’t tell me you’ve been brainwashed by the Professor’s propaganda,” I laughed.

My mentor loved drilling it into Elias’s head that he was the older, responsible one who needed to take care of his ‘little sister.”

The car stopped in front of my building. I unbuckled my seatbelt and got out, smiling back at him.

“Drive safe.”

“Will do.” He returned the smile, waiting until I was safely inside the lobby before driving off.

I was so tired I could barely think straight, my only goal to find my bed. I strode toward the elevator bank, the remnants of a smile still on my face,

Zane was there.

He stood just inside the automatic glass doors, his eyes narrowed as he watched Elias’s white sedan disappear into the night. His voice was low and tight.

“I thought you left with your brother. Why did he bring you home?”

After the last couple of days, I was wary of him. My expression blanked.

“What are you doing here?” I countered, ignoring his question.

“If you won’t move back into our home, then I’m moving in.” His gaze was unwavering as he added, “To the apartment right downstairs, until you’re ready to come back with me.”

He’s moving in downstairs? I had to fight the urge to roll my eyes so hard I saw my own brain. But what could I do about it?

It wasn’t like I could buy the whole building to keep him out–unless I had a hundred million dollars.

And even if I did, spending it to get rid of this guy would be a terrible investment! Oh God… This damn ex–husband. So. Damn. Annoying.

I kept my voice as level as I could. “That’s your own business. You don’t need to inform me.”

The unspoken translation: You moving here is none of my damn business.
