Chapter 238
Does he know?
I wasn’t actually sure.
I’d said it right in front of Charles and the others in the private dining room.
Given how fast gossip traveled between them, he probably knew. Although, he’d been surprisingly… quiet about it.
He hadn’t even mocked me for my failed marriage, for not listening to his warnings back then.
I told her the truth.
“I’m not sure.”
Vera looked taken aback for a second, then felt the need to add, “You know how proud he is. You should really tell him about the divorce yourself, and soon.”
I knew my situation with Gavin was too complicated to explain in a few sentences, so I just nodded. “Yeah, I know.”
But Vera only understood his pride.
She had no clue about mine.
The idea of marching up to Gavin and randomly throwing out, “Hey, I’m divorced,” felt impossible. In my mind, it would be like handing him an invitation: “Hey, here’s your chance to humiliate me.”
To her credit, Vera seemed to realize this wasn’t her place to push. We were, at best, casual friends right now. And I could tell it had taken a lot for her to say even this much.
She’d given up on the marriage arrangement, but thinking about all those years she’d spent fixated on him… I could see a faint trace of sadness in her eyes.
“Alright,” she said, her tone shifting back to business. “I’ll let you get back to work. I don’t want to hold you up.”
She knew our team was racing against the clock.
Vera had barely returned to the executive floor when Abbott knocked on the lab door and walked over to me, a friendly smile on his face.
“How’s the workload holding up?” he asked, keeping his voice low. “Do you want me to try and get a couple more reliable people assigned to the R&D team?”
“No, it’s fine,” I said, giving him a knowing smile. He meant well, but we both knew the reality. “Until this drug is fully developed, no one else is going to respect my authority anyway.”
Better to just leave it as is.
The last thing I needed was to bring in new people who, like Sullivan and his buddy, would just slow us down instead of helping.
Who knows, they might even create an opening for Amelia to cause more trouble.
Third–person POV
The female assistant stood to the side, relaying the newly received information to Amelia in a stiff, matter–of–fact tone.
“President, we’ve just received word from upstairs. Our team has been cut from the Windsor Group’s joint R&D project.”
“What did you say?” Amelia was completely stunned. “How is that possible? This was arranged personally by the Dowager Windsor!”
Everything had been fine just days ago. How could they just cut us out?
“Someone stirred the pot and got the news to Gavin’s ears,” the assistant said, her expression stern. Her voice dropped to a low, warning pitch.
“Anyway, the Dowager has pulled every string she could for you. Now that you’ve been cut, and you even dragged Director Shang down with you…. the rest is on you to figure out.”
Being removed from the joint R&D meant the path forward for Amelia had just narrowed significantly.
She had been counting on riding their coattails to success. Now, it looked like she had no choice but to…
