“Sorry,” I said, taking the tissue from her. I didn’t lift my head, hurriedly wiping the wetness from my lashes before finally looking up was strained smile. “I just suddenly thought of my parents.”
Chloe understood, covering for me with Vera. “Elara’s parents also passed away in a car accident.”
Vera saw through it but didn’t comment. Luckily, the waiter arrived with our food. “Let’s eat! The salted chicken here in excellent.”
After lunch. Chloe headed back to her law firm, and I went with Vera to Windsor Group–she to the executive floor, me to R&D.
Luckily, even though my thoughts were a tangled mess the whole way, the moment I stepped into the lab, I could push all those extra thoughts aside and bury myself in my work. I knew better than anyone what my top priority needed to be.
But when work stopped for the evening, Vera’s words started looping in my head like a broken record.
I was almost afraid to imagine what it actually felt like the moment the bullet entered his body.
I didn’t know how much it had hurt him.
But I could imagine that for someone as fastidious and particular as Gavin, just the sheer indignity of lying helpless in a hospital bed was probably unbearable enough.
Elias had promised to take Octavius out for dinner tonight, so he’d left early.
Right now, in the R&D lab, it was just Caius and me.
Caius was getting ready to leave and glanced back at me. “Group Leader Windsor, are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I said, snapping out of my thoughts and offering him a smile. “We’re pretty much done for today. You can head out.” I was just waiting for one last set of data to come through, then I could leave too.
Caius hesitated, his tone concerned. “You seem a bit off. Let me wait for the data for you. You should go home and rest early.”
“No, it’s fine,” I said. I didn’t really trust anyone outside of Elias with this. “I’ll wait for it myself.”
“Alright then,” Caius said, still looking unsure. “I’ll get going then?”
“Okay.”
After Caius left, I sat alone in the lab for a good while. By the time the data finally came through and I packed up to leave, dusk had long since
faded into pitch black.
Plenty of people in R&D were still working, the lights blazing. A few people were also waiting by the elevators to head home.
I stood there quietly. When the elevator doors opened, I noticed none of the others made a move to get in.
I looked up and saw why. Gavin was inside.
The man was tall, his aura naturally cool and aristocratic. Seeing me, his expression softened slightly. “Aren’t you getting in?” he said, his vo level.
I stepped inside. It wasn’t until the doors closed that I realized I was stealing frequent glances at him.
“Growing fond of me?”

Chapter 250
“Can I get a ride home with you?”
We spoke at almost the exact same time.
We both froze.
His question made me stall, my heart starting to beat wildly for no good reason.
And my question made his eyebrows lift slightly in surprise.
This was the first time since everything happened years ago that I’d actively sought closeness.
It at least meant she didn’t seem to reject him as strongly as before.
I clenched my hand slightly, my answer not quite matching his question as I explained on my own terms, “I just didn’t drive today, that’s all. I was just hoping for a ride.” My car was still at the clinic; I’d come with Vera.
A faint, private smile touched Gavin’s lips. He took in my flustered state, the amusement in his eyes growing. “My question was, were you staring at me because you’re growing fond of me?” he clarified. “Not why you wanted a ride.”
“…” I didn’t even dare breathe too deeply, terrified my heartbeat would grow louder and louder.
Terrified he would hear it.
I slowly drew in a careful breath and fabricated a justification with false bravado. “Some expert online said looking at handsome men can lengthen your lifespan. I was just testing if it’s true.”
