Chapter 253
Lately, knowing how busy I was, he’d just reminded me to get enough sleep, not exploiting that contract to monopolize my time.
I drove out, stopped to buy some nourishing gifts, and then headed to my mentor’s place.
Unexpectedly, right outside my mentor’s door, I ran into the man who should have been across the hall.
He didn’t seem surprised to see me at all, a slight lift in his brow. “Here to see Old Man Colton?”
“Yeah.” I, however, was a little taken aback. “What are you doing here?”
“Came to deliver the invitation to Mr. Colton in person.” He’d already invited them over the phone, but took the time this morning to come himself. “After all, today is important for you.”
I was slightly stunned. I hadn’t expected someone who usually seemed to care about very little to be so considerate.
Before I could fully process it, he glanced at his watch and gestured with his chin toward the house. “You should head inside.”
“Okay.” I didn’t wait for him to leave, turning and going in first.
I’d texted Colton before coming. Sylvia had specially bought a lot of groceries, waiting for me to come for lunch.
“Get in here,” Colton said, beckoning me. Thinking of his student’s achievement, the smile on his face just wouldn’t quit. “After all these years… finally…” He started out happy, but his voice choked up a bit.
He’d seen firsthand what kind of life I’d had with the Windsor family.
Thankfully, it was all in the past. The little girl who couldn’t even tell herbs apart when she first started following him was finally beginning to shine with her own light.
Seeing him get emotional, Sylvia was genuinely happy for me too. She pulled me onto the sofa. “Your mentor, when he heard your drug was moving to clinical trials, was so excited he couldn’t sleep all last night. Just like now, laughing and crying all at once.” She paused, patting my shoulder. “You two talk. I’m going to make a few of your favorite dishes. No matter how Windsor Group celebrates you, our own family has to have our celebration first.”
“Okay. Thank you, Sylvia.” I watched her hurry into the kitchen, then looked back at Colton, feeling my own nose sting. The moment I opened my mouth, tears fell. “Teacher… thank you.” I had so, so much I wanted to say, but in the end, this was all that came out.
For painstakingly teaching me his lifelong medical knowledge, for all the care and love both he and Sylvia had given me over the years…. I could thank him a million times and it wouldn’t be enough. They weren’t blood relatives, but they were more than family.
Colton snatched a tissue and blew his nose, then glared at me with mock fierceness. “What are you thanking me for? Once I took you as my student, everything I did was just what a teacher should do. Besides,” his expression softened into pure pride, “you developing this drug… oh, it makes me so proud!”
When the drug officially launches, he won’t have to hide my identity anymore.
He can finally brag everywhere about how capable his apprentice is.
Just look, the most groundbreaking cancer drug on the market? My apprentice developed it.

Chapter 253
Amelia stood in her walk in closet, carefully selecting an evening gown, when her bedroom door was thrown open with violent force
Victoria stormed in, her face a thundercloud of fury. She grabbed Amelia’s arm and began dragging her downstairs.
Amelia struggled against her grip, furious. “Mom! What are you doing?! Have you lost your mind??
“It’s you who’s lost her mind!” Victoria snapped, turning to glare daggers at her daughter. “The Shangs are here, at our door, and you’re in here primping like you’re headed to a ball! Once you’re dead and cremated, who’s going to care if you were dressed like a socialite or a street urchin?!”
The Windsors?
Amelia’s mind raced. “That old hag from the Windsor family
“Shut your mouth!” Victoria hissed, looking like she wanted to physically clamp a hand over it. “If you’re going to get yourself killed, do it alone. Drag the rest of us down with you, and you’ll regret it.”
“Why would I be killed?” Amelia asked, a smirk of smug triumph twisting her features as a thought occurred to her.
But her confidence shattered the moment they entered the drawing–room. Before she could utter a single word, the Dowager Shang’s hand connected with her face in a stinging slap!
Amelia recoiled, shocked. Before she could even process the first blow, another slap landed hard across her other cheek!
