Money was no object if it meant his mother’s health.

I hesitated, then seized the opening. “I could waive the fees entirely. But, when Mrs. Sinclair shows improvement, might I trouble you to look into something for me?” Zane had told me not to involve Gavin, but he hadn’t said anything about others. And there were other things I wanted to investigate–things I couldn’t let Gavin know about, regardless of Zane’s warnings.

I needed to understand why the Windsors had taken me in, and what their true connection was to my parents. This was the perfect opportunity. The Sinclairs had immense influence; they could probably unearth anything. The question was, would they be willing? Families Like theirs often preferred to pay their debts in cash, not favors.

Benjamin studied me for a moment, his voice clear and steady. “Keep the fees. And regarding your request, I’ll help you investigate whatever it is, provided it’s nothing… unscrupulous.”

I was taken aback by his directness and fairness. “Thank you,” I said, deciding not to refuse further.

Benjamin waited until the three of them had disappeared down the corridor before re–entering the lounge.

Inside, Hannah was sobbing again, her shoulders shaking. Alexander had his arm around her, trying to comfort her. “Hannah, I know… I know seeing girls around our little one’s age is hard for you.”

“If you’re uncomfortable, I can speak with Mr. Colton. See if he’ll take over the treatments himself, alright?”

“No!” Hannah’s head snapped up, her face a mask of heartbreaking grief. “I want her. Don’t you think she resembles our little girl? Don’t you see it?”

Alexander sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Benjamin walked over and knelt gracefully before his mother. “Mom, I just called Aiden and asked. He confirmed that Miss Windsor grew up in the Windsor household. She… she can’t be our sister. But if you like her, I’ll make sure she visits you often, alright?”

Hannah’s tears subsided a little. “Really?”

“Of course,” Benjamin promised.

Elara’s POV

The celebration was winding down when our group finally decided to leave.

Elias, noticing the time, turned to me. “Chloe’s had drinks and is waiting in the car. You should get her home. I’ll take the old man back.”

“Sounds good,” I agreed.

Downstairs, we parted ways at the elevators–my car was in the surface lot, his in the underground garage.

I reached my car and had my hand on the door handle when I saw him. The man who’d pulled me into the fire escape earlier was walking towards me from across the lot.

He moved with that effortless grace, his tie loosened and the top buttons of his shirt undone. He looked both casually rumpled and intensely focused. The words he’d growled in the fire escape flashed in my mind. I swallowed hard, suddenly wanting nothing more than to get in the car and flee.
