He was already up, showered, and looking infuriatingly refreshed, standing at the foot of the bed.

1 scrambled out of bed and shot him a glare. “Just you wait.” Once the drug hits the market, I’m going to take a full accounting of all my assets and dissolve this completely one–sided arrangement between us.

Fresh out of sleep, my face was probably still puffy, and my glare held zero imenace. If anything, it probably made him want to pinch my cheeks.

And, because he’s Gavin, that’s exactly what he did.

He pinched my cheek. “The Sinclairs will probably contact you soon about treating Mrs. Sinclair. Go get ready and eat some breakfast.”

“I know,” I nodded, heading for the bathroom. I glanced back at him, meeting his deep, unreadable gaze. Memories of last night came flooding back. Afraid of a repeat performance, I asked, “Aren’t you going to the office?”

“This is my home. Are you kicking me out?”

“This is my apartment.”

“…” He almost laughed, genuinely annoyed by my sheer audacity. He glanced at his watch. “Fine, I’m leaving.”

I didn’t hurry to the bathroom until I heard the soft click of the front door closing.

For breakfast, Gavin had clearly made enough for three. Two portions were still on the table. I just took the whole platter of food, plates and all, back across the hall to share with Chloe.

Chloe ate the delicious breakfast with gusto. “Now this is what I call a best friend. You even snag me a breakfast haul.”

“Of course,” I said, just as my phone started ringing like it had a personal vendetta against silence. Thinking it might be the Sinclairs, I quickly wiped my hands and grabbed it. My movements slowed when I saw the caller ID.

“Who is it this early?” Chloe asked.

My eyes cooled considerably. “The Windsors.” The difference was, I didn’t need to tread carefully around them anymore.

My expression neutral, I hit ‘decline‘ on the relentlessly ringing phone and set it aside. “Hurry up and eat,” I told Chloe.

“But if you don’t answer…” Chloe knew all too well the methods the Windsors had used to control me in the past. She looked uneasy. “Won’t they get angry?” There was a time, right after I was sent back to the old lady’s estate, when I’d tried to fight back. It was useless. That old witch seemed to have some deep–seated hatred for me; the more I resisted, the more vicious her retaliation became.

I looked at Chloe, refilling her cup with multigrain soy milk. A new confidence brightened my features. “Chloe, for now at least, they won’t dare make

a move.”

“Why? Just because they threw you a celebration banquet doesn’t mean the drug is actually on the market yet…”

My phone started shrieking again, one call after another, relentless, as if they’d never stop unless I picked up.

“I have to go out later, to the Sinclairs“…” I declined each call as I spoke. Remembering Chloe’s history with Aiden, I hesitated, but decided not to hide it. “…to treat Aiden’s mother’s legs.”

Chloe’s eyes widened. “You can cure his mother?” She remembered that Mrs. Sinclair had already been in a wheelchair back when she and Aiden were dating in college. An old injury like that was tough to treat.

“I can. It’ll just take some time. And then…” I nodded, my expression turning hesitant again. Chloe and Aiden’s short–lived relationship had been killed by family opposition. And now I was getting involved with the Sinclairs…

Seeing my hesitation, Chloe seemed to guess the reason behind my changed attitude toward the main Windsor house.

If I was treating Mrs. Sinclair, the Windsors wouldn’t dare touch me now without openly making an enemy of the Sinclairs. And by the time I’d cared Mrs. Sinclair, the drug would likely be on the market. Even without the Sinclairs‘ support then, the Windsors would have to hack down completely.

Chloe also instantly understood the source of my current hesitation. She poked my forehead.

“What are you overthinking now? I’m happy your skills have reached this level, and I’m happy you’ve connected with the Sinclairs, Babe, if you think it’s the right thing to do, go for it. I want you to soar, not be the one holding you back.”
