Chapter 267
“Of course I am.” Amelia said with utter confidence.
A member of Elara’s own team had handed it to her. And the data Elara had submitted to the other departments had already been swapped out
The drug Elara was now pushing into clinical trials was something her own team had hastily concocted, with no proven efficacy against cancer. Its side effects. however, were significant
Once Elara’s project reached the human trial stage… heh… the scandal would be massive, enough to drown even Windsor Group’s reputation in the court of public opinion. She wondered if that Gavin would still be so protective of Elara then!
The assistant noticed that the screen of Amelia’s phone, which she had left aside, was lit up and reminded her, “You have an incoming call
Amelia shot her a look. “Then see yourself out.” Previously, Amelia had been somewhat wary of this assistant, knowing she was the Windsor family’s plant. But now, emboldened by having stolen the formula for Elara’s supposedly low side–effect cancer drug, she felt entitled to her arrogance.
The assistant, understanding the source of this new confidence, swallowed her displeasure. “I’ll go now.”
Only after the assistant left did Amelia answer the phone. Hearing the butler summon her to the Sapphire Hotel to be introduced to the Vanderbilts, her spirits lifted immediately. She grabbed her purse and rushed over.
The Vanderbilts, while not the Windsors‘ equals in New York, had considerable influence in both legitimate and shadowy circles. Making a connection could
only be good. Amelia assumed Margaret was rewarding her for securing Elara’s research.
But the moment she stepped into the private dining room, a sense of unease crept over her. The butler gave a curt jerk of his chin, directing her to sit next to a grotesque–looking man! She’d heard of this… creature. A bastard son, not just ugly but notorious for his depraved personal life.
denching her fists, Amelia sat down. The man leaned over, looked her up and down, then turned to Margaret. “Margaret, this is the famous Miss Windsor?” Some of the young men in their circle had praised Elara’s face and figure to the heavens, calling her the picture of innocent allure. The real thing looked… rather underwhelming. And ‘innocent‘ was the last word he’d use. Her deep V–neck dress practically offered her breasts up on a platter. Slutty.
Margaret could see his dissatisfaction, but in these situations, she rarely needed to speak. The butler rose, leaned close to the fourth Vanderbilt son, and whispered a few words. The man’s eyes lit up. “Really?”
Naturally,” the butler replied with a smile.
Amelia was lost throughout the whole exchange, but when the ugly man next to her started getting handsy, she began to grasp the situation. The Windsor old aag had sold her out! And only because Elara had refused to cooperate!
Midway through the meal, seizing a moment when the creep went to the restroom, Amelia mustered her courage. “Madam, what is the meaning of this? I igreed to help you deal with Elara, not to prostitute myself-”
You think your body is some prized commodity?” Margaret cut her off. With a look, she signaled the butler, who slapped a stack of photos down in front of
Amelia.
Before Amelia could even pick them up, her eyes landed on them. Her pupils constricted. She frantically gathered the photos and shoved them into her bag. You investigated me?” The investigation spanned nearly a decade.
Margaret merely smiled, not even bothering with a verbal reply. It was enough. Amelia fell silent, thoroughly cowed.
After the meal, clutching her bag and swallowing her disgust, she left with the half–deformed fourth son of the Vanderbilt family! But she logged this debt irmly in Elara’s column. If Elara had just cooperated, she wouldn’t be the one facing that monster!
ater, after leaving the hotel room, Margaret called her again. “Elara has connected with the Sinclairs. Weren’t you also a Jade City University alum? If she laims she can cure Mrs. Sinclair’s legs, you should be able to as well, right?”
Which Mrs. Sinclair?”
How many are there? The Mrs. Sinclair! They’re here in New York!”
