Gavin had taken out a bellyful of rage on me. Then he’d taken the rest out on Zane.

‘‘I saw Chloe bite back whatever curse was on the tip of her tongue.

Forget it. Men aren’t worth discussing.

‘So what are you going to do now?” she asked, getting back to what mattered.

That car accident… the Windsors had covered their tracks too well. Even with the evidence Zane dug up, we could only infer it was them. It wasn’t enough for iny real legal case. And with the Windsors‘ power and influence, getting revenge any other way seemed impossible.

I set my empty beer can on the coffee table. “Ill wait and see what they do next.”

Yeah.” I laid out my thought. “Zane said today that the person involved is getting out of prison in the next couple of days.”

Back in his own apartment, Zane sat for a while but couldn’t shake the suffocating feeling in his chest. He pulled out his phone and called Charles.

Want to grab a drink?”

Sure,” Charles replied, pausing his video game. He agreed readily. “Want me to call the others?”

The “others‘ meant their usual group of childhood friends who often hung out.

The rest of their friends had always taken Amelia’s side over Elara’s. In the past, only Charles had ever consistently urged him to be kinder to little Elara.

they met at their usual haunt, a bar called “The Velvet Rope.’ Deep in the night, the place was still a riot of shifting lights and pulsing noise. A server who knew hem led them upstairs to a private booth.

just as the booth door was closing, a group of women passed by in the hall. One of them stopped, peeked inside, then turned away to make a quick call.

Amelia was just out of the shower when her phone rang. “What’s up so late?”

‘Guess who I just saw at The Rope?”

“Zane!” the woman whispered, stepping away from her friends. “And he’s sporting a fresh shiner. Looks miserable, too. You better get down here before some other little social dimber snatches him up.”

“Got it.” Amelia glanced down at her still flat stomach. “You’ll be rewarded once my position is secure.”

After hanging up, the woman cast another look toward the closed booth door. Zane was effectively the sole heir to the Grayson fortune now. If Amelia could really lock him down, her position in their circle would be unshakable.

It took a few rounds of drinks for Charles to get the full story from Zane. He blinked, processing ‘So you’re saying Gavin might have had feelings for little Elara all along?”

Zane swirled the amber liquid in his glass, ice clinking. “Does he strike you as the impulsive type?”

Not really,” Charles admitted. Gavin seemed to live by his own rules, but there was always a method to it.

Fueled by alcohol, Zane let out a bitter laugh. “And to think we trusted him. Always asking him to look out for her.”

Looked out for her real good. Right into his bed.

The memory of constantly asking for Gavin’s help in winning Elara back now seemed like the biggest joke. He’d considered Gavin a brother. Gavin had considered him a fool.

Charles didn’t immediately agree. He refilled Zane’s glass before offering his blunt take. “Honestly? I don’t see Gavin doing anything wrong here. Your divorce from Elara has been final for a while. That makes her a free agent.”

Who she dated, or who pursued her, was no longer Zane’s business.
