“Yes.”
I didn’t bother hiding it. My expression stayed calm. “But you don’t need to go against your family because of this.”
Elias had founded this clinic with his family’s backing. Most of the time, they didn’t interfere–but occasionally placing someone here? That was pretty
normal.
“I can talk to them-”
“Elias,” I cut him off gently. “Knowing Zane, he’s not the type to owe favors. He probably worked out some kind of business arrangement with your family.”
Elias didn’t look happy. “I’m sorry. They mentioned something before, but I didn’t take it seriously at the time.”
“It’s not your fault.” And I meant it. “Even if you’d refused, Zane would’ve found another way.”
Zane and Gavin were cut from the same cloth–both relentless when they wanted something. The only difference was Zane preferred a softer touch, while Gavin went straight for the kill.
When we opened the door again, Amelia was waiting calmly outside–just as I’d expected. Zane had set things up thoroughly for her. She wasn’t
worried at all.
She stretched out a hand, a triumphant smile on her face. “So? Ready to show me the ropes?”
“Of course.” My expression didn’t change.
“At the clinic, I’m your senior. Outside it, I’m still Zane’s legal wife. Whether professionally or personally, looking after you is my responsibility. Don’t be shy.”
I left it at that, ignoring the way her face twisted with anger, and walked off like it was nothing.
Later, waiting for a taxi outside the clinic, a thought hit me:
-I should buy a car.
When I divorced Zane, I took two properties but didn’t want any of the cars. Always relying on taxis wasn’t working.
When Chloe heard the idea that evening, she was all for it. “Good call. When are you thinking?”
“Tomorrow.”
That’s how I’ve always been–once I decide something, I don’t drag it out. Same went for the divorce,
The next day, I worked my morning shift and headed to the dealership alone in the afternoon.
Almost immediately, my eyes landed on the red limited edition 911 parked in the showroom.
A sports car with smooth, gorgeous lines.
The passenger door was open, a waterfall of Floyd roses spilling elegantly to the floor, each bloom delicate and fresh.
“Only one of these made it to New York in the last six months,” the salesman explained, catching my gaze. “It was pre–ordered at a premium before it even arrived–a gift from a very generous client to his wife. They’re probably coming to pick it up soon.”
“How romantic.”

Chapter 57
I was just looking–way out of my budget. Those two properties were valuable, but my liquid cash was limited. I’d always found security in saving.
After browsing for a bit, I finally settled on a Panamera they had in stock.
“Excellent choice!” The salesman was clearly thrilled. Ite didn’t see many buyers this decisive, but he wasn’t shocked. Rich people did what they wanted.
He held back a grin and guided me through payment and pickup. He offered to do a whole delivery ceremony, but I declined. “No need. Can I take it
now?”
“Yes, of course! My colleague just parked it outside. Let me take you to it.”
He couldn’t have been more attentive. A wealthy, no–fuss customer was probably his dream.
When I finally took the keys, a small smile touched my lips. “Thank you.”
This car was my first big purchase since the divorce. It meant something–like a reward for having the courage to start over. I was glad I hadn’t stayed stuck in a terrible marriage.
I opened the door and was about to get in when Amelia’s voice cut through the air from the front of the car:
“Elara, what are you doing here?” She paused, then her tone turned smug. “You didn’t follow us after finding out Zane was buying me a car, did you?”
