chapter 59
“Alright, I’m sure.” Zane said.
I looked up at him with a faint smile. “Good. Then go make it clear to everyone here, right now, who your wife actually is. If you can’t do that, then just go back to Amelia and help her with her new car.”
I could tolerate his affair. I could even play along to smooth things over when he needed me to.
But I would not be made to look like the other woman.
If he walked out with me now, in everyone’s eyes, she would be Mrs. Grayson–and I’d be the one who ruined their picture–perfect relationship.
Zane froze, completely thrown by my demand–of course, my feelings had never factored into his calculations.
He shifted uncomfortably, scratching his head before pressing his lips together.
“Elara…”
“Mr. Grayson,” I cut in, making the choice for him, “I have other plans, so I’ll be going now.”
My voice was calm but clear–loud enough for the nearby staff to hear.
That “Mr. Grayson” drew a sharp, unmistakable line between us.
The sales director quickly jumped in, oily and eager to please. “Ah, Mr. Grayson, so this lady is just a friend! Had I known, I would’ve offered her our
best discount.”
“…Mhm.”
The moment Zane agreed, I shut my car door and drove off.
In the rearview mirror, I watched Amelia loop her arm through his, all sugary–sweet smiles. And Zane–for whatever reason—just stood there staring blankly at where I’d disappeared.
A few months ago, I would’ve turned right back around. Asked him what was wrong, played the caring wife.
But now?
Who the hell cares.
I’m not that woman anymore–the one who waited by the door, who put her life on hold for his attention.
Now? I’m just me. And I’ve got my own damn bullet points to focus on:
-Finalize this divorce.
Uncover what really happened to Ethan–and who sent those mysterious texts.
– Chase the medical career I’ve put on hold for far too long.
Their little love drama? Not my circus, not my monkeys.
Unless, of course, they had something to do with Ethan’s death. In that case, I’ll be the one handing over the evidence that lands them behind bars.
A new kind of calm settled deep in my chest–a mix of freedom and certainty I’d never felt before. For the first time, I knew exactly who I was and
what I was here to do.

chapter 59
No more lost little wife. No more living in someone else’s shadow.
I finally was.
At a red light, I eased to a stop. A new notification popped up on my phone–a message, then an immediate call. I didn’t even bother reading the text before answering.
“Professor.”
Colton’s voice was warm and steady. “Elara, I’d like your thoughts on something.”
I was curious. “Of course. What is it?”
“It’s about your… well, about Gavin. You remember when he came by the house recently?”
He paused, and I could faintly hear Sylvia nudging him in the background. He cleared his throat. “He has a cancer drug research project that needs our clinic’s medical team to collaborate.”
“I was planning to assign Elias to lead it. I wasn’t going to bring it up to you, but Sylvia insisted I ask for your opinion.”
The light turned green. I pressed the accelerator gently.
“Professor,” I said without hesitation, “I want in.”
My reason for studying medicine had always been to help people. There were only so many patients I could see in the clinic each day–but a project like this? It could change countless lives.
Especially for cancer patients…
Windsor Corporation had the most advanced labs and the top research teams in the country. I wouldn’t pass up a chance like this.
I didn’t want personal history getting in the way of something that truly mattered.
Colton sounded surprised. “Are you sure? If you join, you’ll be at Windsor Corp frequently. You might run into Gavin…
