Chapter 75
His lips parted as if to speak, but I couldn’t bear another word.
Hadn’t I humiliated myself enough in front of him?
No–this was more than enough. I admitted my defeat.
I just wanted him to stop talking. I wished I cared less about him.
The residual alcohol in my bloodstream made my movements both impulsive and swift. Like a cornered animal, I grabbed my bag and bolted from the car with a speed born of pure desperation.
One more second and he would have seen the tears threatening to fall–no, spare me that dignity. Must I always be the clown?
Ha.
The night air whipped against my cheeks, sharp and sobering. When I was sure no one had followed, I slowed to a heavy walk under the streetlights.
A memory from three years ago surfaced–the day I decided to marry Zane. Gavin, who hadn’t spoken to me in four years, suddenly appeared. He forced me into his car and said coldly, “Who gave you permission to marry Zane? I don’t agree.”
How laughable. The person who had once discarded me like a stray dog, who stood by while I endured punishment after punishment–what right did he have to tell me what to do?
Who was he to interfere with my life?
Did he think I was some kind of pet, waiting obediently for his attention?
What a joke.
I refused. But he locked the doors, his face dark with anger, and wouldn’t let me out–not unless I promised not to marry Zane.
As if.
I’ve never been the obedient type. “I’d rather die than let you control me,” I told him. And with that, I threw myself out of the moving car.
That was the day everything between us shattered.
Almost everyone blamed me. They said I was ungrateful.
But so what?
Who cares?
All I knew was this–I would never again be that lost dog trailing behind Gavin, waiting for the day he’d abandon me once more.
I barely got the door open before Chloe rushed me, all like, “My bad, babe! Had I known Gavin would pick up, I would’ve zipped my lip!”
“I was wrong…!”
”
I was still feeling a bit dizzy, but I decided to play along. “Mm, make me some honey water and maybe I’ll forgive you.”
“Okay!”

Chloe hurried to set my bag on the cabinet, then scurried off to the kitchen and came back with a cup of honey water, warm and sweet.
She handed it over, beaming. “Really forgiven me?”
“Forgiven.”
I nodded with a faint smile.
It wasn’t like I ever thought this could stay hidden forever anyway.
When Gavin picked up my phone in the car, yeah, I was embarrassed–but by the time we got upstairs, honestly? It was more like relief.
If he wanted to laugh, so be it.
I was past caring.
Chloe studied my face, probably checking if I was actually upset, then took the chance to ask, “So… why did Gavin answer your phone, anyway?”
“Because rules don’t apply to him.”
It didn’t surprise me. He’s always been like that–willful, unreasonable.
I gave her the short version of what happened at dinner. She listened, then paused, thinking. “Wait… Elias could’ve driven you back, but Gavin insisted on taking you himself.”
“You think he’s… trying to make things right?”
“?”
I frowned. “Have you ever seen someone make amends like that?”
“But what if he is? Would you give him another chance?”
“No.”
I didn’t even have to think about it. I took a slow sip of honey water. “Between people, there’s only one chance.”
Just one shot at trust, fully given.
Reconciliation? That word doesn’t exist in my book.
Once it’s broken, no matter how you try to glue it back–it’s all cracks and caution.
Every relationship works that way.
Even if we pretended things were okay, I’d always be waiting for the next time he’d let me down.
“Hey, before you go–I found something while digging into Ethan’s past.”
Chloe’s tone shifted into that unmistakable I’ve got gossip voice.
“You are not going to believe this. Ethan Windsor–old money prince, billionaire heir, the whole package–had a secret Instagram account.”
She was trying to distract me.
I could tell she’d noticed my mood, and now she was swinging into cheer–up mode, all bright energy and whispered secrets.
So I played along, raising my brows and letting my jaw drop in exaggerated surprise.

“No way! A secret account?” I leaned in, matching her conspiratorial tone.
