Chapter 50: Scary Times
Sedona’s POV
I twisted as I fell, using everything I had left to rotate my body, to make sure that when I hit the ground Molly wouldn’t be underneath me, and I would crush her underneath me.
I felt Rachel’s hands grabbing for the baby, heard her shouting something I couldn’t quite understand or maybe hear at this point, and then what I felt next was the cold shock of the paving stones against my shoulder, my hip, the IV stand clattering down beside me.
Molly was crying now-full-throated infant distress-but she was in Rachel’s arms, she was safe, I hadn’t hurt her.
That was my last coherent thought before everything started to blur out at the edges, as I could see the darkness coming in slowly with me knowing there was nothing I could do to stop it.
There were voices above me, urgent and overlapping, causing noise but I couldn’t bring myself to focus on what was being said.
I could feel the hands on my body, checking pulses, tilting my head, trying to check my pupils as I felt pressure underneath my eyes.
Someone was calling for a gurney, for Dr. Mitchell, for someone to please get that baby out of here because this wasn’t something a child should see.
I tried to focus on Rachel’s face, tried to tell her I was sorry, that I’d been having such a nice day and I’d ruined it, that Molly was probably terrified and it was my fault.
But the gray was turning to black, soft and thick and pulling me down like water.
The last thing I registered before everything went dark was a different voice cutting through the chaos- Cameron’s voice, rough with fear in a way I’d never heard before, saying my name like a prayer he didn’t expect to be answered.
Cameron’s POV
I’d been in a meeting with the Seattle office acquisition team going through the reports of the people that they had brought in this month when my phone rang.
It was my mum’s name on the screen, which wasn’t unusual-she’d been calling regularly with updates about Sedona’s condition, without me prompting her. She was giving me information about the small improvements or setbacks that happened daily, I was appreciative of it because this was something that needed to hear even though I was trying to maintain some semblance of normal work hours.
What was unusual was that she called twice in thirty seconds.
I excused myself from the conference room and answered. “Mom? What-”
“Cameron, you need to come to the hospital. Now.” Her voice was shaking, controlled but barely. “Sedona collapsed in the gardens. They’ve taken her to emergency. Rachel is hysterical and your father and I are on

our way but you’re closer and she was asking for you-”
I was already moving, before she finished speaking z grabbing my coat from the back of my chair, my laptop abandoned on the conference table as I focused on getting to the hospital. “Is she conscious?
“I don’t know. Rachel could barely talk. She just kept saying there was blood on the pavement and everything was going well. She was laughing and then Sedona fell and-Cameron, please hurry?
I made it to St. Anthony’s in twelve minutes, which should have taken twenty-five. I parked illegally in front of the emergency entrance and ran through the automatic doors, scanning the waiting area for familiar faces.
Rachel was there, holding Molly, both of them showing evidence of recent crying. Enzo had his arm around her, his expression grim like he had been told terrible news and was trying to remain strong for his
wife.
“Where is she?” I demanded.
Rachel pointed with a shaking hand toward the treatment area as she spoke.
“They took her back about ten minutes ago. Dr. Mitchell came down personally. Cameron, there was so much blood. She just-she was laughing at the birds with Molly and then she just collapsed and there was blood and-”
“I need to see her.”
“They said family only-”
“I’m family.”
I pushed through the double doors before anyone could stop me, found a nurse at the central station who tried to intercept me with practiced efficiently of someone who was used to doing this all the time.
“Sir, you can’t be back here-”
“My sister. Sedona Preston. Where is she?”
Something in my voice or my face must have convinced her this wasn’t worth fighting as she immediately gave me the answers that I was looking for without wasting my time.
“Treatment room four. But sir, they’re working on her, you can’t-”
I was already moving.
Treatment room four had its door partially open. Through the gap I could see what was happening, it looked like chaos that was being controlled as I could see the nurses moving with urgent precision, monitors beeping frantically, Dr. Frank Mitchell bent over a hospital bed with his hands doing something couldn’t see clearly.
And Sedona.
I could only see parts of her between the medical staff-a pale hand hanging off the edge of the bed,, the thin figure under hospital blankets that looked small.
Stary Time
-pressure dropping, we need-”
-another unit of O-neg, get me-”
*-internal bleeding, possible perforation-”
I must have made some sound because Frank looked up, saw me in the doorway.
His expression went through several rapid calculations before landing on something that looked like resignation as he shook his head as he said.
