Chapter 54. Beginning The Treatment

Sedona’s POV

Dr. Mitchell came the next morning with consent forms that I could immediately notice from the bulkiness of the forms were longer and more frightening than the ones I’d signed for the initial treatment.

He went through every page, taking his time and without rushing through it, explaining in careful detail what each section meant for me, what they would do, what risks I was acknowledging to take and what I was agreeing to endure.

“This is your last chance to change your mind,” he said when we reached the final page, as he arranged the forms, before placing it on the table as he looked at me and added.

“Once we start this protocol, stopping mid-treatment could be more dangerous than not starting at all. You need to be absolutely certain this is something that you want to take. If you need more time to think about it, we can put it on pause for a few days for you to make up your mind.”

I looked past him to the window, where I could see my family gathered in the waiting area, they had been told not to enter inside with the doctor because this had to be my decision and not influenced by my family. I could see my mom and Dad sitting close together, her head on his shoulder.

Cameron pacing again, phone to his ear-probably work, probably trying to maintain some sense of not all in a situation that was not normal.

Rachel was with Molly, and she was pointing out something through the window to distract the baby from the tense surrounding.

They’d all come back to see me. They’d all stayed, despite the fear and uncertainty and the very real possibility that they were going to watch me die.

If I gave up now, I’d be choosing to leave them. Choosing to accept that the past five years of separation would be all the time we got left and I refused to be what they would remember me as. I deserve to be happy and I was going to fight for it, no matter how long or painful it may be.
