Billionaire, I Am Not Your Wife! novel Chapter 96

Chapter 89: Being Totd About Logan

Sedona’s POV

Cameron told me everything that had been happening that I was not aware of.

He did not rush it through, but rather he told it slowly, with the particular care of someone who understood that the thing they were saying was going to land differently depending on how it arrived, and wanted to give it the best possible chance of landing well, so it would not become an issue that I wouldn’t be able to manage well.

Logan had called. Logan had gotten Cameron’s number from somewhere-a private investigator, Cameron suspected, because that was someone who had enough resources and enough direction to find what he’d been looking for.

He’d called and identified himself immediately, no dallying about, and had asked, with a directness that Cameron said had surprised him, whether there was any version of this where Sedona would agree to see him, that he wanted to meet me in person.

He’d told Cameron about the hospital and what had happened in my absence over the past weeks. He told Cameron about the nurse who had broken protocol to tell him about the cancer, about sitting in the parking lot of Chicago General afterward feeling like a shitty person who had abandoned his wife when she needed him, about Nick finding the wedding ring under the bed and realizing that he had truly broken his marriage with his own hands and there looked to be no sign of reconciliation.

He’d said he was sorry. Not as a strategy, Cameron said, or at least not in the way of someone who had rehearsed it for effect, or trying to just lie his way through something and hoping him saying it would be enough to k****e sympathy for his case.

Cameron told me that he had said it in the way of someone who had arrived at it through something painful and wanted to say it even knowing it might not be accepted by the person that he had hurt badly.

He’d said Nick wanted her to know he didn’t mean it, any of the cruel things that he had been saying to her, that he had been told and was repeating it because he thought that was expected of him and he was at fault for not correcting him at those times and letting it become something Nick saw as the truth. That Nick had asked Logan to tell her that he is sorry and needs her back.

I listened to all of it. I lay in my hospital bed with the evening light going amber through the window and I listened to my brother tell me that my husband had called him from Chicago, and I waited to feel the thing I expected to feel-the pull of it, the complicated wanting, the specific weakness I’d had for Logan Hayes for three years that had kept me in a marriage long past the point where staying made sense.

I waited for it.
