Dawson went down hard.

Blood was already dripping from his split lip to the white collar of his jacket, and his cigarette was abandoned somewhere on the porch tiles, still smoldering faintly in the cold air.

I stepped forward, my fist already curling for another hit, every bit of restraint I had carried through the boardroom and the drive home finally gone. Weeks of my father’s quiet cruelty, months of Dawson’s smug provocations, all of it collapsed into the single burning need to hit him again, to make him feel even a fraction of what he had cost me these past weeks.

“Rieck, stop!”

Aurelia shoved herself between us before I could land the second blow, both hands on my chest, her eyes wide and pleading up at me.

“You wouldn’t want to commit murder.” Her voice stayed steady, though I could hear her heart pounding. “You are better than him.”

I stood frozen, my chest heaving.

Dawson was still sprawled on the porch tiles behind her, groaning and spitting blood on the stone.

“Get out,” I said, my voice flat and final. “Before I change my mind.”

Dawson dragged himself up, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, glaring at me with something between hatred and humiliation.

He said nothing more, only turned and stumbled towards the street, leaving a thin trail of blood behind him on the pavement, his white jacket ruined beyond anything a dry cleaner could fix.

Inside, I paced the living room while Aurelia fetched a small first aid kit from the bathroom, my hands still trembling faintly with leftover adrenaline.

“Why did you stop me?” I asked, watching her set the kit down on the counter.

“Because you are not him.” She reached for my hand, turning it gently to inspect my bruised knuckles. “You may have lost your company, Rieck, but you are still a decent man. A CEO doesn’t need a title to be one. Beating him half to death on our own porch would only give my father in law more reason to call you reckless.”

“He deserved worse.”

“Maybe he did.” She dipped a cotton pad in antiseptic, her eyes flicking up to mine. “But you deserve better than becoming the kind of man he already thinks you are. I spent two years believing restraint made me weak, that staying quiet was the price of being loved. I learned the hard way that it isn’t.”

“You are not talking about Dawson anymore.”

“No,” she admitted quietly. “I am not.”

She worked quietly as she cleaned the split skin across my knuckles, dabbing carefully, her brow furrowed in concentration.

Something in the way she touched me undid the last of my anger completely, replaced instead by something I had spent thirty years actively avoiding feeling for anyone at all.

When she finished, she looked up at me, and whatever she saw in my face made her breath catch.

I kissed her before either of us could speak again, my hands cupping her face.

And she kissed me back without hesitation, her fingers curling into the front of my shirt, pulling me closer like she needed the contact as much as I did.

She was spread across the kitchen table minutes later, my hands mapping every inch of her while she gasped my name into the quiet room, the last of dinner’s dishes pushed carelessly aside to make room for us both.

I thrust into her slowly at first, savouring the way she arched under me, her fingers digging into my shoulders, her breath coming in short, desperate bursts.

She met every movement with her own, refusing to just lie still and take what I gave her, her hips rising to meet mine with a hunger that matched my own thrust for thrust.

“Rieck,” she gasped, her nails dragging down my back, leaving lines I would feel again in the morning and welcome every one of them.

I groaned low against her throat, picking up the pace, chasing the sound of her voice breaking apart under

Whatever anger Dawson had left simmering in my blood tonight went away entirely under the weight of her, replaced by something far more consuming, something only she had ever managed to summon out of me.

She squeezed around me with every roll of my hips, her back arching off the table, her moan finally breaking loose loud and unguarded as she came undone, her whole body trembling under mine.

That was when I saw it.

For a single split second, her eyes flashed a bright, unmistakable green, glowing faint in the dim kitchen light before fading back to their normal brown just as quickly, so fast I nearly convinced myself it had never happened at all.

I froze above her, my own release forgotten for a moment, my heart pounding for reasons that had nothing to do with pleasure anymore.

“What,” she breathed, dazed, still trembling under me, clearly unaware of what had just crossed her face.

“Nothing,” I said, though my mind was already racing.

Maybe I had imagined it. Maybe the low light had just played tricks on my eyes in the heat of the moment, some strange trick of exhaustion and adrenaline still leftover from the fight on the porch.

I gathered her against my chest, and said nothing more.
