I stood outside the lobby for a long time after leaving Hebvron’s study, letting myself cry now that no one was watching.

His words kept circling back, sharp and cruel. “Perhaps I should have chosen someone else entirely.”

Pressing a hand over my mouth, I stifled the sob in my chest, my whole body shaking with the effort of holding myself together.

For a long moment I just stood there, letting the city move around me while I fell apart quietly against the building’s stone wall.

“He is clearly in love with you.”

I held onto that single line, the only comfort Hebvron had given me by accident.

Whatever else he meant to break tonight, he hadn’t meant to hand me that truth, so I held it tight against everything else he had said.

It was already dark by the time I wiped my face and started towards the street.

Rieck would be looking for me soon, worried, maybe angry that I had gone to confront his father alone.

I needed to get home before that worry turned into something worse.

So I flagged down the first taxi I saw. It slowed, then sped past without stopping. Another did the same, and another, drivers glancing at me and deciding I wasn’t worth the detour in weather this bad.

Then the rain started, cold and sudden, soaking through my coat within minutes, plastering my hair flat against my face and neck.

After a while, I gave up on the taxis and started walking, my arms wrapped tight around myself, the streets growing quieter and darker with every block.

The city here felt different from the familiar streets near the penthouse. The buildings were older, the alleys were deeper, and the few streetlights were flickering weak against the downpour.

Just then, somewhere behind me, footsteps echoed against the wet pavement.

Without bothering to look back, I quickened my step, my heart beginning to pound.

But then the footsteps quickened too.

Looking back, I saw two figures in dark hoods moving fast, closing the distance between us.

I ran, my shoes slapping hard against the flooded pavement, my breath coming in ragged bursts, rain stinging my eyes and blurring the dark street ahead of me.

:.

Suddenly my foot caught wrong on a broken curb and I went down hard.

I scrambled backward against a brick wall, my ankle refusing to hold my weight.

The two hooded figures were nearly on top of me now, with one reaching down towards me with something shining cold in his hand.

“This is it. This is how it ends, in some alley no one will find for hours.”

Then a gunshot cracked through the rain.

Both men dropped where they stood, collapsing in a heap just feet from where I sat frozen against the wall, rain washing thin red lines across the pavement under them.

I stared at their bodies, my chest heaving, unable to process what had just happened, the smell of gunpowder cutting sharp through the wet night air.

Footsteps approached, and then Rieck was there, kneeling in front of me, his eyes wild with something between rage and terror, his own clothes already soaked through from the rain.

He must have caught my scent somewhere near Hebvron’s building and followed it through every rain soaked street between there and here, the way only an Alpha could track something the rest of the world would have lost within minutes.

“Aurelia.”

He gathered me into his arms without another word and carried me towards the car.

The doctor arrived within the hour, examining my ankle under the bright kitchen light while Rieck paced behind him, saying nothing, his jaw locked tight, his wet hair still dripping onto the collar of his ruined shirt.

Marta hovered near the doorway, wringing a dish towel between her hands, her eyes flicking anxiously between the two of us like she wanted to help but didn’t know how.

“It’s a small fracture,” the doctor said, wrapping the joint in a strong brace, his hands quick. “She will need to stay off it for a few weeks, but it will heal completely. She was fortunate.”

“Fortunate.” Rieck repeated the word like it tasted bad in his mouth, his voice low and dangerous.

The doctor packed his bag and left quickly, clearly sensing the tension he didn’t want to be caught in the middle of, murmuring a quiet apology to no one in particular on his way out.

The moment the door closed, Rieck turned on me, his voice low and shaking with barely restrained anger. “You almost got yourself killed. Again.”

“I know.”

“You don’t fucking know.” He paced the length of the room, running a hand through his hair, water still dripping from the ends onto his shoulders. “Two men, Aurelia. Waiting in an alley, armed, patient. If I had
