I didn’t scream. I didn’t cry. I just turned and walked away, leaving the folder scattered across his office floor along with whatever remained of the trust I had given him.

“Aurelia, wait.”

But I kept walking. My heels sharp on the marble. Refusing to slow down even as his footsteps closed the distance behind me. My whole body running on something colder than anger now.

“It was a mistake.” His hand caught my arm at the elevator. “She kissed me. I didn’t want it. I swear.”

“Let go of me.”

“Aurelia, please. You have to let me explain.”

“I said let go.”

He immediately let me go, the way he always did the moment I asked, and somehow that made it worse, that he could still be so mindful with my body while shattering everything else about us with the same two hands.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, I stepped inside without looking back.

He followed me home. He followed me into every room that evening, apologizing in every version he could think of, every single one landing hollow against the image burned permanently behind my eyes.

“I pushed her away the second you walked in.”

“I don’t care.”

“Aurelia, look at me.”

“I said I don’t care, Rieck.” I moved past him into the kitchen, needing space, needing something to do with my hands that wasn’t shaking with the urge to break something. “There is nothing you can say right now that changes what I saw.”

He followed me even there, standing just far enough away to give the illusion of space.

“It meant nothing. It lasted less than a second. I pulled away the moment I understood what was happening.”

“You didn’t pull away fast enough, Rieck. Not nearly fast enough.”

“Aurelia.”

“Stop saying my name like that.” My voice cracked, the anger finally splitting open into something rawer. “Like saying it enough times will fix this.”

“Then say nothing at all.” I set down the knife I had been gripping without realizing it, my hands finally still. “For once, Rieck, just say nothing at all.”

He stood in the doorway of our bedroom now, blocking the exit, his voice low and desperate in a way I had never heard from him before.

“Nothing happened before that. I swear it.”

“You swore a lot of things.” I turned to face him, my voice shaking despite my best effort to keep it steady. “You swore there was nothing to worry about with Selene. You swore that file was nothing important. How many more things have you sworn to me that were lies?”

“That’s different.”

“Is it?” I crossed my arms. “Because from where I’m standing, it all looks exactly the same. Every single lie, wrapped up neatly and handed to me with a straight face.”

He said nothing, his jaw working, and for once he had no answer ready.
