Twelve men in good suits sat around Dawson’s table, and not one of them dared interrupt him while he worked.
“We move on the eastern parcels first.” He tapped the map spread across the glass. “Buy under three separate names so the sellers don’t see the pattern. And once we hold the block, we squeeze every small builder still standing on it. They sell to us or they starve. There is no third option on the table.”
A junior board member cleared his throat. “And if Rooffe tries to outbid us on the parcels?”
“Rooffe can’t outbid air.” Dawson didn’t even look up. “Their credit is bleeding out from the inside. I want term sheets on my desk by Friday.”
“And the workers on the small sites,” another man asked, quieter, “when they lose their contracts.”
“Then they find new ones, or they don’t.” Dawson finally looked up, and the temperature at the table seemed to drop half a degree. “I didn’t build this company by losing sleep over men who bet on the wrong builder.
Next item.”
Suddenly his phone buzzed against the glass.
He almost let it sit. But then he turned it over out of boredom, and the single line on the screen stopped the whole meeting cold in his chest, though nothing showed on his face.
‘In your office.’
No name. No number he recognized.
“We are done for today,” Dawson announced, and stood before anyone could ask why.

He found the man sitting in his own chair when he walked in, boots up on the corner of the desk, and Dawson shut the door hard enough to rattle the glass.
Dawson slowly set his jacket over the back of a chair, refusing to let the man see him rattled by his own furniture being used against him, in his own building, in the one room in the city that was supposed to be just his.
“You have some nerve,” Dawson said.
“You told me to get down here.” The investigator, a grey unremarkable man Dawson had used for years exactly because no one ever remembered his face, didn’t move his boots. “So here I am.”
“Then talk.”
“The drive.” The man finally sat up. “Your black book. The one that vanished out of your vault and turned up damaged.”

“It’s dead. My tech confirmed it months ago.”

“Your tech confirmed the drive wouldn’t power on.” The investigator’s voice stayed flat and unbothered. “That isn’t the same thing as dead. Someone got the data off it anyway. Copied it. Read it.”
Dawson’s jaw went tight. “How?”
“Off books recovery, high end. The kind of work that costs real money and leaves almost no trace.” He shrugged. “Almost. I found a trace.”
“Whose money?”
“Kaelen’s.”
Dawson had spent years learning exactly how far that man’s reach ran, mapping every border, every ally, every quiet threat, and none of it had ever once crossed into his own vault before tonight.
“That’s not possible.” Dawson steadied both hands flat on the desk. “How does a mountain king get anywhere near a drive I kept locked three floors under my own building.”
“He didn’t get near it. Someone brought it to him.”
“Who?”
“There’s only one name that fits the timeline, Mr. Valerius.” There was a pause. “Your ex wife.”
Dawson laughed once, short and disbelieving.
“Aurelia,” he said again, tasting how absurd it sounded out loud. “The girl who used to apologize to furniture when she bumped into it.”
“People change, sir. Especially the ones we teach not to trust us.”
At that moment the room went very quiet.
“Aurelia.” Dawson said it slowly, testing the shape of it. “Aurelia doesn’t have the stomach for something like
that.”
“Aurelia had access to your vault. Aurelia vanished the same week the drive left the building. And Aurelia has been seen, more than once, in territory that belongs to a man who doesn’t host tourists.” The investigator stood up, unhurried. “I’m not telling you what to believe. I’m telling you what the timeline says.”
Dawson said nothing for a long moment. He just looked out at the city.
“Get out,” he said finally.
The investigator let himself out without another word, and Dawson stood alone in his office with his own black book bleeding secrets into a rival Alpha’s hands, and understood that his sweet ex wife had done something far more dangerous than he had ever once given her credit for.

It sat three sub basements below the tower, a room with no name on the directory and a lock that answered to nothing but his own hand, built for the one purpose of holding the things he could never let another living person read.
